PETITION TO PERMIT CYCLING ON ASHDOWN FOREST

Young people of Crowborough (a town in East Sussex, England) and surrounding villages need somewhere to cycle off road.
Ashdown Forest (which is mainly heathland with wide paths) is a large resource on our doorstep but cycling is prohibited.
We appeal to Ashdown Conservators to allow young people to use this common land.

    • I raised the topic of cycling on AF at the last commoners meeting at it was refered to by the superintendent.the Conservators still seem opposed to the idea as it is difficult to police.I live in the forest and think limited access could be permitted without detriment.Perhaps initially on a tempory trial basis.

    • The pressure is growing, how long can the over-conservative folk in charge of the forest resist?

    • It seems an awful shame to deny cyclists access to this beautiful area

    • I'm a 44 year old teacher in Tonbridge and I've been a MTBiker for 2 years now. I live in TW and am always amazed at the lack of off road cycling in the area. I'm currently looking to move to Crowborough but if I didn't have children in school I would be looking at somewhere more bike friendly such as the Quantocks. I've been upto the 7 staines in scotland and a number of the forestry hubs in Wales (Afan, Cumcarn) The conservators need to take a look at these places just to realise how out of touch with life they are

    • can't belive that cycling is not allowed on Ashdown forest, something about it being dangerous, eroding the ground. What and horses dont!!!!, and the mess dogs leave thats more dangerous than cyclists. its needs to be changed.

    • I as a young resident of Nutley, have no place to mountain bike aswell as many of friends who live in either Nutley or surrounding villages. This is a stupid by-law considering the fact that horse riding is allowed on the forest that would create double the amount of soil erosion to the forest as a mountain bike would. Me, my family and friends would like to see these by-laws removed or changed. As a slight suggestion mountain bikers could be permitted to ride on the Ashdown forrest just as horse riders are permitted. This would bring more people to enjoy the surrounding areas of the forrest and will create money for the council leaving more money for emprovment on and around the Ashdown Forrest area. This by-law is just plain stupid and everyone is just missing out. Change this by-law in the new-year of 2012!

    • With the increase in unhealthy living and obesity in this country I find it staggering that the physically active pursuit of cycling is not permitted on the Ashdown Forest whereas far less physical pursuits of walking and horseriding are perfectly acceptable. There are numerous forsts around the UK (eg. Bedgebury Forest, Kent)that have set up dedicated cycling paths to keep cyclists seperated from walkers so this must be possible in the Ashdown Forest.
