The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has approved a measure to kill over 100,000 stray dogs in the city of Srinagar in India by poison by the end of March 2008.

Quoting an article on the Times of India website, health officer of SMC, Riyaz Ahmad Dar said: "We have set a target of killing more than one lakh stray dogs in Srinagar city. The drive is likely to begin in a fortnight's time." He further goes on to say that they are justified in doing this to make the city safer for human population. We all know dogs are NOT wild animals, and will only attack if provoked or abused. Dogs are not dangerous and have always been termed as Mans Best Friend since thousands of years.

There has got to be a more humane option of settings things right. Surely 100,000 dogs at a time cannot be dangerous and lethal. Lets give them a chance to live.

Our suggestion:

We all have enough to eat and often throw away food each night after dinner. If each family can give those left overs to these dogs, they would love us and be our friends and never pose a danger. Lets give them a fair chance. Lets give them the gift of love and life.

Please join us; Dogs World India, to stop the poisoning of our dog population in Srinagar!

Thank you!

Note:
One lakh is the Indian equivalent of 100,000.

    • whi is this mass massacre being conducted? just because of the fact that these four legged beings cannot shout or defend themselves in protest? God has given them a life and hence right to live, which we, as human beings have no right to snatch.

    • The authorities have to understand that killing is not a solution to this situation.Although this is a major problem faced by many states,we need to come up with an effective & humane way of dealing with this which is steralisation.

    • It is cruel and inhumane to kill such wonderful creatures. It would be a much better use of time to kill terrorists instead.

    • I am horrified to hear of this "MASS MASSACRE" in Srinagar , India of Stray Dogs. Have the Civic Authorities in Srinagar gone bonkers ?? Surely, there must be other solutions if this is indeed a problem which i doubt it is. Let me ask the authorities a question ?? Why do so many Dogs have to be killed as in a Mass Murder kind of way ?? What are the authorities doing about the Jehadis and Terrorists in Srinagar -- surely they are a huge cause of concern to the population in Srinagar or anywhere in Kashmir as compared to Dogs. Dogs have been Man's best Companion and friend down the ages. Shame on you Srinagar Municipal Corporation in engaging in Mass Murder of the worst type on Man's best Friend !!!!
