Deregulation of Ontario Hydro

To the Ontario Legislature,

Whereas the Government of Ontario with its privatization and deregulation of Ontario's electricity system has led to rates that have more than doubled for consumers; and

Whereas privatization has never reduced the cost of any goods or services to the consuming public; and

Whereas electricity deregulation in California has led to blackouts and sky high rates; and

Whereas the sale of our electricity production company has yielded absolutely no net benefit to the Ontario consumer

Whereas Ontario needs a system of public power that will ensure a fair, stable rate;

Therefore let it be resolved that the undersigned call on the Ontario government to reverse electricity deregulation and privatization and bring in an accountable system of electricity delivery.

    • We have gas water heater, dryer & stove, yet between our last and current billings costs went up 27%. Our bill is over $500. We are retired and on fixed income and find the expense totally unpredictable and certainly not fair to Canadians. Why do we always follow the ideas of the US (which are always full of faults) instead of using our own brains. The US privatized energy to the point that they were unable to pay the costs which resulted in blackouts. We are trying to do the same thing. With the rising costs it will get to the point where no one can afford to buy the power.

    • I think it is an outrage that the Ontario government once again has promised the public that deregulation of the Ontario Hydro would save us money when in fact they knew full well that it would be the exact opposite. Once again, we Canadians fell for it. This is our time to speak up and tell the government that we are not going to take it anymore. Lets stand strong as Canadians and fight for what is right.

WHEN THIS FIRST CAME OUT AND UNTIL PRIVATIZATION, WE WEREN'T TOLD, WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A 100% HIKE IN HYDRO BILLS, WE WERE EXPECTING PERHAPS LOWER COSTS AND HERE WE ARE LIKE EVERY BODY ELSE...WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO FOR XMAS, MORTGAGE PAYMENTS, LOAN PAYMENTS AND OTHER BILLS. NOBODY IS PAYING OUR BILLS. WE GET OUTSELVES IN DEBT AND NOBODY IS BAILING US OUT! GUESS WHAT....WE HAVE NO ONE ELSE TO GO TO FOR ANOTHER RATE. SO WHAT ARE WE SUCKERS TO GET SHAFTED LIKE THIS. WHY ARE WE GETTING NAILED TO THE WALL FOR SOMETHING WE DIDN'T DO? IT'S NOT OUR FAULT ONT.HYDRO IS IN THIS DEBT. HOW IS THE U.S. GETTING CHARGED TO OFFSET THIS BILL AS WELL OR ARE THEY GETTING A CHEAPER RATE? DO WE KNOW? WHAT'S NEXT?

    • My last bill was 569.00 and how much more can l aford to pay.You are sending the pensioners out to the streets.lbet you are all getting a nice raise and are able to retain your familys and who cares about ours as there is no need for bills going the way they are so stop and think about other homeowners and not just about yourselfs as it is us that you are hurting and you do not seem to care

    • As long as Ontario's for-profit electricity sellers can raise prices whenever supply dwindles, it serves their interests to let supplies dwindle. They have no reason to increase supply. This situation will only worsen unless we reverse privatization now.
