BCS Football Presidents
Dear Madams and Sirs:
College football fans, including many of your students, alumni, coaches and players, are overwhelmingly in favor of a playoff system for NCAA Division 1-A football. The current system is simply a mockery and the year-by-year anecdotal evidence (e.g. 2004 13-0 Auburn Tigers, etc., etc.) need not be rehashed.
Every other meaningful sport, college or pro, decides its champion using a playoff system. Examples in point are the NCAA basketball tournaments and college baseball and softball world series, which are such wonderful spectacles. Imagine the uproar if we decided those champions with polls and bowls (or is it bowls and polls?)! The Associated Press seems to agree.
Understanding the stated obstacles to a playoff system, we come to offer a framework for a viable alternative system.
The new system will include eight teams playing in a three round bracket. The teams could be determined using the current system (or a selection committee) and games would take place as follows:
-Last weekend in December (all home games for the higher seeds) 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5
-First weekend in January (National semi-finals using 2 of current BCS bowls alternating annually) - a true bracket with no reseeding please
-Second weekend in January (Championship game using one of the remaining 2 BCS bowls again alternating)
The bowls are preserved and the timetable does not interfere with conference championship games, Fall semester final exams or the start of the Spring semester. The best teams compete for the championship on the field and undefeated non-national champions (no one beat us, but we didnt win either?) are a thing of the past. We know that everyone involved is apprehensive about change, but also recall that college football games actually ended in ties in the not too distant past, that change seems to have worked out.
We as fans are obliged to act in numbers to end the current system and, thus, issue the following mandate:
Unless the BCS Presidents act at their meetings in Phoenix, AZ in April 2005 to implement a multi-round bracketed playoff system similar to one listed above to be enacted prior to signing future or extending existing television contracts, we pledge to take action. We choose not to attend, watch or follow in any way, the 2006 Orange Bowl (following the 2005 season) scheduled for Tuesday, January 3, 2006, with the sole exception of the one team that we primarily follow participating in this game. This game is not the mythical championship game (the Rose Bowl the following day is) nor does it work towards determining the champion, as most feel it should, and has therefore been deemed irrelevant, much the same as the recent 2005 Sugar Bowl (Auburn vs Virginia Tech).
We simply love the sport but must act to end the travesty that is the current system. <
