I recently learned about the terrible treatment of ducks used to make foie gras. I was even more disturbed when I discovered Sonomas connection to this needless suffering. Due to national media coverage, Sonoma, CA has become synonymous with animal cruelty.
As Im sure you are aware, on September 16, 2003, ABC7 described how ducks are treated at Sonoma Foie Gras, a supplier to area restaurants. At least three times a day, a worker grabs each duck, shoves a long, thick metal tube down [his] throat and an air pump shoots up to a pound of corn into the duck. This process of deliberate and painful force-feeding causes their livers to swell up to twelve times their normal size. Some birds literally burst open from force-feeding, choke to death on their own vomit, or become so weak they are unable to fend off rats from eating them alive.
Because of its inherent cruelty, force-feeding of birds has been outlawed in Denmark, Germany, Norway, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Israelthe fourth-largest producer of foie gras in the world.
We need to take a stand against this cruelty in our community as well. I urge you to support an ordinance banning the sale of foie gras in the town of Sonoma. Doing so would restore Sonomas image as well as promote the humane treatment of animals in our society.
