Petition to Free Terrell Johnson

We, the undersigned, demand that the District Attorneys office of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, under the supervision of Stephen Zappala, immediately drop the false charges against Terrell Johnson.

Terrell Johnson has spent the last 16 years locked in a state prison, separated from his children and loved ones, for a murder that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania knows he did not commit. The only evidence used to convict Johnson consisted of the false testimony of Evelyn McBryde, who told police she witnessed the murder two weeks after it occurred and only after being arrested for theft. McBryde could have faced 50 years in prison due to her extensive record, which included charges of prostituting her children, but pending charges were dropped in exchange for her testimony.

In August of 2009, Terrell was awarded a new trial. In September of 2009 Terrell was offered a deal: admit to a lesser charge and be released immediately for time served. He refused the deal because he is innocent.

Terrell is currently being held on false charges based on zero evidence. He could have been released last year, but that would not be justice. These charges need to be dropped immediately and the persecution of an innocent man brought to an end.

Respectfully Submitted,

    • Mr. Zappala, You are part of the Innocence Commission in our state. You should know that wrongful convictions happen every day in our country. You should be the 1st to allow this man his freedom, after serving 16 yrs for a crime he did not commit!!! The guilty do not refuse plea bargains for their release but Terrell Johnson did!!! Please, release him today. He has already served much more time than deserved as he has been innocent since day one!!!

    • Since you know he didn't do the crime, you would not have offered a lesser crime to falsely admit to!

    • We must have true justice where innocent people are not falsely arrested and detained by a blatant abuse of power. Let truth and mercy rule instead. The real murderer should be brought to justice!

    • I think its ridiculous for a innocent person to have to fight like this man has to get back his freedom especially when the other individuals walked on all charges. I am convinced they are making an example out of this man because thats how the racist state of Pennsylvania is there is no way in this life time a innocent person should be force to plead no less than innocent and the so called witness should have to do the time this man has served with a life sentence attached to it.
