Stop Walgreens on Delaware Ave. in Buffalo, NY

We, the undersigned citizens, voters, and taxpayers of Buffalo, NY, oppose the destruction of an intact, authentically urban commercial block at Gates Circle to build a Walgreen's pharmacy.

We are satisfied that the neighborhood is adequately served by an existing drugstore one block away.

We argue that the rich architectural heritage, appealing pedestrian scale, and existing small businesses of Delaware Avenue will be irreparably damaged by the imposition of a out-of-scale, suburbanesque, big box retail store.

We demand that our elected and appointed officials block this assault on Buffalo's most historic boulevard and that Walgreens instead select one of our many "shovel ready sites."

    • This kind of proposal is a textbook example of blindered thinking by many national corporate chain retailers. The marketing research which is done looks only at demographic densities, location of competition, traffic patterns, and parking potential. The goal, time after time, is to muscle out the competition. It's insanely arrogant. The only sure loser is the neighborhood and the community.

    • I was shocked and concerned when I read that this was being considered - Delaware Avenue is home to much of Buffalo's stateliest domestic archtecure - the loss of any more of the historic structures there (especiallly in the shadow of Gates Circle) would diminish its character.
