Petition to maintain the teaching of German at the University of Leicester

The University of Leicester has put forward the motion to cease the teaching of German. Whilst it has been stated that the degrees of the current students will remain unaffected by such an action it is easily argued that this motion could have detrimental effects on the reputation of ALL degree programmes. We hope to prevent this motion by gathering support in the form of this petition and showing the amount of support that the German department has.

o Many students consider studying German when deciding to study foreign languages. If the University of Leicester were to stop offering German at degree level it is likely that many students will be unable to take the University seriously, leading to a fall in the reputation of the University, which in turn could have a negative effect on the reputation of all degrees awarded by the University.

o If the School of Modern Languages were no longer able to offer German to degree level students from other degree programmes, such as Film Studies, would no longer be able to participate in the German content modules, such as Introduction to German Cinema or the German Democratic Republic.

o If the motion to cease the teaching of German at degree level were to be passed many of the Universitys links with other prestigious German Universities would cease to exist, making it somewhat more difficult for any students wishing to take a year abroad in Germany to secure a place in these institutions
