In 1997 The Chancery Court ordered Horseshoe Lake water level to be held at the following levels:
December 1- May 1 at 194.2 feet
May 1- December 1 at 193.2 feet
Since that time the lake has suffered extremely low water levels, especially in summer. The Horseshoe Lake Drainage and Irrigation District was formed at a great cost to property owners on and adjacent to the lake. We have been pumping well water into the lake each summer at great cost, but the pumping alone has not been enough to keep our piers, docks, and boat ramps operative due to low water levels.
Some summers, the bayous and canals have been completely dry and the water quality and health of the lake has suffered tremendously. Water for the lake comes entirely from rain water in spring and winter; therefore, we desperately need to hold a higher lake level May 1 December 1 due to the high evaporation rate during the summer.
On May 1st of every year, we are court ordered to drain Horseshoe Lake to a level of 193.2 ft. With the new dam and water control structure on Beck Bayou, the water drains much faster than it did in 1997, when the court order was originated. We need to use the new water control structure to hold more water for both intervals set by the judge. It will cost much less to hold 18 inches more water as oppose to pumping water after draining in the spring.
Furthermore, we, the undersigned, urge the commissioners of the Drainage and Irrigation District to petition the Chancery Court to alter its previous order to allow us to hold 18 inches more water in the lake for the benefit of the property owners and guests.

    • I grew up in West Memphis and have fished Horseshoe hundreds of times. I remember when the bass fishing was fantastic. I am now an outdoor writer for the Evening Times. The reports from Horseshoe aren't as good as they should be. The lake level needs to be higher and I don't know why this court order even exists.
