  • This proposal for a newly constructed road on the north shore of Fontana Lake is an absolute travesity. It's a superb example of our government selling this countries natural and pristine resources in the name of polictics to generate revenue and support among elected official's constituents. The remote and pristine beauty of this area is what attracts thousands of tourist each year. Bulldozers and paved highways will only deter those that truly appreciate this beautiful area in an already over-crowded Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Please assist us in stopping this horrible act.

  • I have just recently done the whole loop around the lakeshore and above trails by foot. I would hate to see such a remote and presteen area be disturbed by cars and the like.

  • As a conservationist and one who frequents the northshore area for recreational activities including hiking and fishing, I find the northshore road proposal to be an unnecessary intrusion into an idyllic wilderness area. This area is a veritable treasure and captures the essence of the spirit of conservation and preservation upon which the national park system was founded. To intrude upon the solitutude and beauty of this pristine wilderness with a road system of questionable benefit is not only environmentally unsound but fiscally criminal considering the budget constraints of the GSMNP and the current needs for both manpower and resources with which it is faced. As a taxpayer, user, and supporter of the park system, I am appalled that such a project is even under consideration. I consider any vote in favor of such a measure to be negligence on the part of my elected representatives.

  • It is necessary, as well as desirable, to protect our remaining wilderness areas. Also, this project is pure pork barrel. In this difficult fiscal environment, when social programs for our most at-risk children and families are being cut and our budget strained to the max with the costs of natural disasters and the man-made disaster of war, we do not need to use our limited dollars on a project with such questionable benefit.

  • I have lived in the Smoky Mountains National Park area for most of my life. I also spent 3 to 4 seasons working at Mt LeConte Lodge, third highest peak within the park boundary, a 6,600 ft. eagle eye view of the greater park border. From this time line and vantage point , I have witnessed first hand the not so slow entrenchment of the Great Smoky Mtns. National Park(island)-via by the uncontrolled urban sprawl of Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, condominiums, chalets, subdivisions and roads chasing the unbalanced dollar at the huge cost of choking off the wilderness that supposedly drew people to this region in the first place. At night spreading across the valley floor, light pollution from a 6,600 ft. view point, shows the indisputable concern for the health of our beautiful wildlands and wildlife. There are very few dark areas left intact on the valley floor and Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg ad Sevierville look more like the Las Vegas strip tha the quaint entrance towns that they used to be.   • This park contains internationally significant biodiversity and should remain as protected as possible. Building this road will further fragment the park, will increase the input of invasive species into the park, and will increase road traffic in this section of the park.   • We are fortunate to live in one of the most naturally beautiful states in the union. If money must be spent on road construction, use it to repair or widen existing roads. Please don't continue the construction, and destruction, of our natural resources. Don't proceed with supposed "advancements" which may force future generations to view those majestic mountains, trees and wildlife areas as only pictures and museum exhibits.
