The family of Michelle Hayes desperately needs your help to keep a convicted murderer from being paroled.

Dawn (Michelles sister),and her aunts Kim, Joyce, Judy, and Bonnie have a message for the men who killed her niece. "We haven't forgotten and we're going to do whatever we can to keep you in jail."

Michelle Hayes, who is buried in the Mentor Municipal Cemetery less than 100 yards from where she was killed, mutilated and dumped in a shallow grave will have no chance to enjoy her life or family unlike her murderers when they are released.

Michelle, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, had attended Mentor High School with Grant and Cohen. Michelle was at Cohen's home in July of 1985 to see Grant who was living with the Cohen family at the time. Grant said they killed Michelle because she had resisted his sexual advances. The two admitted killing Michelle with a punch to her throat, then dragged her nude body to the garage and cut her legs off with a saw so that her body would fit into a wheelbarrow so they could haul her body and bury her in a backyard berry patch behind Cohens home in Mentor. They then buried Michelle in a shallow grave.

Michelle was missing for two weeks before her body began to decompose and the neighbors started to smell the awful odor. In the period between the murder and finding Michelle's body, Cohen bragged to several people that he had murdered a girl and buried her in his back yard. Finally Cohen's younger brother told police that Stephen had said a girl was buried in the back of their home.

A jury convicted Grant of involuntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to eight to 25 years in prison. He is at the Madison Correctional Institute. Cohen was convicted of murder, but that conviction was overturned on appeal. In 1990, before his new trial was to begin, Cohen pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to an eight- to 25-year term. He is serving at the Marion Correctional Institute.

Cohen and Grants family can write and visit whenever they want. Michelle doesn't have that," Michelles sister said. "My daughter will never know her aunt. I have to take her to the cemetery to visit her."

Those interested in writing the parole board about the case can send letters to the victim section of the Ohio Parole Board, Adult Parole Authority, 1050 Freeway Dr. N., Columbus, O. 43229. Writers should include the men's inmate numbers. Grant is 197-111 and Cohen is 190-147.

There were so many lives turned upside down by these events. Not only has her parents passed away fighting to keep these two so-called-men in jail, but four generations of her family have been affected by these cruel, heinous crimes. And don't forget about the generations to follow that will have to learn about Michelle's death and possibly carry on the fight to keep her murderers in jail.

These men will eventually be released, but it will truly be a crime if they are out before they serve the maximum sentence (which still isn't suitable).

PLEASE sign both petitions to keep these beasts in jail. They are titled as follows:

URGENT Family of Michelle Hayes vs. Scott A. Grant

URGENT Family of Michelle Hayes vs. Stephen B. Cohen

    • I am not sure what gives him the right to expect to get out, but I will do everything in my power to make sure he stays in for his full term (which is nothing in my opinion). To the parole board members; if he gets out, he could be your neighbor someday so think about your decision.

    • I lost my aunt to the jealousy of a so called man who then decided to try to kill himself afterwards but unfortunately he didnt succeed. Maybe the state will show justice and make sure this murderer at least serves his maximum term.

    • Please leave him behind bars. He never gave the girl a chance to be free so he should not be free. I live in Mentor and do not want someone like him back in my neighborhood

    • It's sad to think this young girls life was only worth 25 years and this monster will be able to walk the streets and continue his life. Just doesn't seem right does it?

    • I ALSO HAD A FAMILY MEMBER MURDERED, AND THE PERSON WHO TOOK MY BROTHER'S LIFE, SHOULD HAVED DIED IN PRISON. BUT THANKS TO THE "SYSTEM" AND PRISONS BEING OVER CROWED HE DID NOT SERVE THE WHOLE ENTIRE SENTENCE. I BELIEVE IN THIS, AND EYE FOR AND EYE, AND YES YOU PEOPLE ON THE PAROLE BOARD MIGHT THINK DIFFRENT...BUT IT'S BEEN OVER 30 YEARS, AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THE MAN, THAT SHOT & KILLED MY BROTHR WHEN HE WAS JUST 23 YEARS OF AGE. ALL I ASK, IS JUST ONE THING, THINK OF ONE PERSON THAT YOU LOVE SO MUCH, THAT YOU WOULD DIE FOR, AND THEN THINK OF THAT EVIL MAN, THAT TOOK AWAY A LIFE. AFTER YOU HAVE WALKED A MILE IN "MY SHOE" THEN YOU CAN SAY, I'VE BEEN DOWN THAT ROAD.

    • Keep these two in jail where they belong. It seems to me they enjoyed what they did, so, let them enjoy what they have "earned".
