Cauvery Water Tribunal Verdict

The river begins in Karnataka but the state has always said the 1892 agreement, which is the source of the dispute, is unfair.

That was the year when the British-ruled Madras presidency (now Tamil Nadu) bulldozed the Maharaja-ruled Mysore (Karnataka) not to do anything with the Cauvery waters without the permission of Tamil Nadu.

In 1974, the Raj-era agreements lapsed. Tamil Nadu wanted them continued while Karnataka wanted to renegotiate in 1990, and so, the Cauvery tribunal was set up to resolve the standoff.

In the 17 years since then the only thing the two big states agreed to, was the figure of 740,000 million cubic feet.

This is the average amount of water that follows in the Cauvery annually. But the two differ vastly on how much water they need.

Tamil Nadu says it needs three quarters of this and Karnataka can make do with only a quarter. But Karnataka wants two thirds and let Tamil Nadu get

This verdict is not a realistic one since the water in the river depends on the monsoon. If there are no rains for a year or two where will Karnataka get water to pump it to Tamilnadu.

Pl. sign this petition in-order to change this ruling by the tribunal keeping in mind the realistic situations.

    • we need cavery water given more to us. since we have lot of requirement for water since we get very less of water. we use borewell water itself. as per kannadiga i demand for cavery water. we request the judgement to be changed either they could give equal tmc of water to both chennai and karnataka. but here their is no justice. looks like politicians and judgedes been bribed by tamil nadu people and have given the justice towards them. only 270 tmc of water to karnataka doesnot makes any sense since cavery takes birth in karnataka. we want justice. i think govt should take proper decision where both the side should be favoured.

    • justice towards the cavery water given to karnataka is not fair enough. we have the same requirements till now more than chennai. if you look at bangalore's growing population then you will definetly be obliged to give the water more to karnataka. since from all parts of india we have people residing in bangalore. i am a tamilian born and brought up in bangalore. but i know the status of water been provided for us. it doesnot make sense to give 419tmc of water to tamil nadu. just because of agriculture. we to in karnataka have lot of agricultural lands same as chennai may be more than chennai. goverment should not consider this justification i think. i think its not a fair decision.

    • I request the senior authorities to investigate the decision and give justice to Karnataka. Its really shocking to know that less water will be suppiled to Karnataka, eventhough Cauvery takes birth in Karnataka. JUSTICE PLEASE........

    • We treat Cauvery river as our mother. It's much more needed in Karnataka than in other states. People have their lives dependent on this river. So, i think Karnataka should be awarded more water than other states. Some politics is definitely involved somewhere. I request the authorities to please check that and give justice to broad minded Karnataka people. Thank you

    • Just the thought that we have to give water much more than we make use of is not just injustice but utter silly. Cant even imagine on what grounds this justice was awarded in such a lopsided manner to Tamil Nadu.If we do not aggressively/passionately campaign against this unruly justice we will lose our beloved Cauvery Mother forever. So please continue this campaign so that our next generation do not curse us for our in-action against such a atrocious act.
