Dearest Kiefer,

We, the undersigned fans, urge you to please, please stop smoking, and stay stopped, in 2009. You bring us so much pleasure, on the big screen and the small, and we want you to keep on doing so for many years to come. We want you to Bauer onto our screens and blow our minds away with your acting. You once said that the fans would decide when Jack should hang up his hat. And you are quite right - that decision should rest with us, not with your coronary arteries.

Of course we realise that it is not easy to quit. Some of us are smokers and ex-smokers ourselves. And we will forgive you if, while you are quitting, there is a little less spring in your step, and if you fail to smile quite so sweetly to the hundredth person who asks for your autograph. (Should your acting skills suffer while withdrawing, however, we would heartily recommend the patches.)

Do it for yourself, do it for us. Do it for you children, do it for Hamish. Just do it.

    • Kiefer, On Oct. 3rd I was released from the hospital. I have cancer and was very ill due to smoking. I've been treated and still have difficulty breathing. Stop Smoking. My Doctors cannot perform the surgery necessary to get rid of the cancer. I wish I had never smoked a day in my life. I'm 54 years old. Quit.

    • Kiefer, I am signing this not to tell you what to do with your body, but to let you know that I care about you very much. Maybe you think your acting job may require you to smoke at times, so why give it up? I believe you can give up smoking completely & yet be able to smoke as normally as ever when the occasion requires it. My own dad did just that; after over 15 years of not touching a cigarette, he was cast in an indie film in which he had to smoke for several hours, & he did so without any negative side effects (including the side effect of wanting to keep smoking afterwards). I have been a fan ever since "Flashback," and after "Three Musketeers" & "Cowboy Way" came to believe that you were someone really special, a gentleman inside & out, and I think God put that on my heart so that I would pray for you. Even if you never act in, make or direct another film, or never do another TV series, I would still hope you decide to quit smoking before it's too late for your health & quality of life.
