The City of Detroit announced in Dec. 2005 that the legendary Kronk Gym would close its doors along with eight other recreation centers. These cuts were due to the ongoing budget crisis in the City of Detroit. The Kronk Recreation Center is a valued center to many Detroit residents, young and old, who use the center for swimming, basketball, and arts and crafts.





In the basement of the Kronk Recreation Center is the world renowned boxing gym that has produced a phenomenal list of World Champion boxers. The resume of fighters that have trained at Kronk is a well recognized group from Thomas Hitman Hearns, Hilmer Kenty, Michael Moorer, Mike McCallum, Lennox Lewis and even Sugar Ray Leonard to name a few.





Due to the efforts of Emanuel Steward and his supporters, the Kronk Recreation Center is still open. The Detroit Recreation Department estimates it will take $500,000 to maintain the facility on an annual basis.





We are asking people to sign this petition to have their voices heard, and to help us spread the word to show how the Kronk Gym truly is an asset to the residents of the City of Detroit. Each city has their crown jewels, in Detroit we have the sweet sounds of Motown, state of the art museums, and a world famous boxing gym in the Kronk Recreation Center. Help us show that we are intent on keeping the Kronk Recreation Center open for many years to come.

    • I am a product of the Kronk Recreations Center and now I am attendin the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. It was hard to find a place of refuage in an area where there was so much negative aspectes floating around. Kronk was like a home away from home and to see it close down is like seeing a friend lose their house or not being able to help a family member who needs you now more than ever. Kronk has been keep some of the children in its neborhood out of trouble when there was so much to get into. If Kronk is taken out of the community where will the children go when they are looking for refuage? The drug dealer? Gang members? In this day and age our children need somewhere they can have ginuwine fun and feel safe, and Kronk is definately the epitome of that!!
