Proposing a Women's Class in the AFM

Greetings!

We are proposing a women's motorcycle racing class to the AFM, the American Federation of Motorcyclists, one of the oldest and most prestigious local roadracing clubs in the country, and would like your support!

In 2008, there were a mere 7 women racing with the AFM, compared to around two or three hundred men. Based on the conversations we've had in the community, it is our strong belief that the creation of an AFM women's class will help bring more women to the track. There are certainly some women out there at track days who may discover that they belong in a competitive environment, but for whatever reason have not yet made the leap, and that this class will encourage them to come out. We also believe that the creation of a women's class will inspire competition and comaraderie amongst women at the track in new and exciting ways. We hope to someday enjoy the same kind of success and recognition as the women in the Canadian Pro Honda Oils Women's Cup Challenge, a series that produced AMA racer and California Superbike School Instructor Misti Hurst, a racer who was at first opposed to the creation of a women's class, but then ultimately extolled its benefits.

At this point we would prefer that the rules of the class for 2009 be "run what you brung" - in other words, any motorcycle will qualify, so all women who have passed an accredited New Racer School and have an AFM license will be able to participate. During our debut year, we expect that we will learn a lot about what a women's class should look like in terms of rules and restrictions; for upcoming years, for example, we may propose motorcycle size rules to increase competition and level the playing field.
