We wish to express our extreme disapproval of the governments renewed attempt to de-staff Lightstations on the BC and Newfoundland and Labrador Coasts. We firmly believe that the services of Lightkeepers cannot be replaced by automated equipment. We demand the retention of these public servants, who provide the eyes and ears along the coast, helping to keep our mariners and aviators safe.

    • please continue to staff your lighthouses. not only do they assist boaters in trouble they are also the eyes on the water for illegal immigrants entering Canada. No, they cannot watch every inch but every little bit does help

    • Far too many things are being automated, usually providing less service to the general public. Let's not let the lighthouses become one of them!

    • The lighthouse keepers are life savers. We have a great debt to them for keeping the mariners safe and providing assistance in emergencies. Please do not destaff the lighthouses, we need these people on site 24/7.

    • We went through all of this in the year 1998. The meetings held on the Coast by Coast Guard brought a halt to the destaffing. Todays bureaucrats have dismissed the taxpayers for their own agendas. We live in a democracy. Coast Guard has recently spent 15 million upgrading the light house infrastructure. Now they intend to follow a policy of scorched earth, destaff and destroy. We are in a recession. They have hundreds of millions of dollars to hand to the autosector in Ontario but not a penny to keep the civil service fuctional. This issue shows all of Canada what type of a country we will have if the bureaucrats get to make and enforce public policy. This must be stopped and a royal commission started to make a complete overhaul of the upper echelon.

    • This is a vital part of service to all mariners and I believe it should not be discontinued. There is no replacement for PEOPLE at these stations.

    • Tell me how a computer would be able to assist in a life or death situation where a real ife keeper could assist in last min weather changes to the rescue ships and air support. a real ife keeper could also assist over the radieo in the case the peoples in trouble are no longer able to talk on there raideo. come on people it has worked for so many years why fix something that is not broken

    • De-staffing lighthouses is like de-staffing police stations. Another brilliant move by the New Conservatives.

    • Get rid of some of the paper pushers instead. You now have more people in the offices than in the field. In the 1970's the ship crews alone out numbered the office staff. I don't think there are any fewer miles of coastline now than then, and I know the work load hasn't shrunk appreciably, but the crews definitely have.
