I am writing as a matter of grave concern for the welfare of my sister and her family.

My sister Mrs Marie Cooley is currently in Germany with her Husband and their 4 children. Her husband was posted there last year against the advice of my sisters psychiatric doctors. My sister had been previously based in Germany and had been the subject of a sexual attack by an unknown man who was never caught. This as Im sure you can imagine had a very lasting damaging effect on my sisters well being. Last June/July my Brother in Law was informed that they were being posted back to Germany; this caused a major setback for my sister which required medical intervention. The army promised to investigate their circumstances and see about posting them home.

After numerous doctors & psychiatrist reports along side reports from the AWS office all recommending that they be sent back to the UK ASAP the Commanding Officer did say that if a posting in the UK could be found for them then they could transfer back to the UK. While all this has been going on my sister has suffered severe depression which has resulted in her taking an overdose and this resulted in her being admitted into a hospital in Germany. She is still in hospital as I write this letter. The latest turn of events is that the army HQ in Glasgow have found a posting for my Brother in Law but the Commanding Officer has now changed his mind about allowing the posting and has said that my sister and the children can come back to the UK but my brother In Law will have to stay based in Germany if he wants to keep his job, or he can discharge. The family cannot be split up as my sister needs the support of her husband. My brother in law is able to complete his normal duties when they are back in the UK as my sister has us her family to assist with support. The option of leaving the army is an ultimatum that scares them as this has been my Brother in Laws only job since leaving school.
My brother In Law has been in the Army now for 19 years and only has 3 years left before retirement, during this time he has completed numerous tours of duty in N Ireland, Bosnia, Sierra Leone etc He has always been an exemplary solider and has been awarded medals for his service. His Families officer has now told my Brother in Law that he must choose between his family or his Job.

Is this really the best way to treat a loyal hard working solider after so many years of service? Please sign this petition so that we can apply pressure to arrange the posting back to the UK.

I would appreciate your help by signing this petition as I am seriously concerned about my sisters mental well being and of the effect this is having on their children and marriage. Please help to keep this family together.

Many Thanks from a very concerned Big Brother

Mr Simon Woods

    • As a single soldier with no commitments things could be different but as this is a family case it should be treated more sensitively.

    • Being a EX Familys Officer I can understand this problem and can completly agree that todays army is all about the welfare of the SOLIDER and not the family forceing the solider to chose between the army and his family! So he has done 19 years for what! He has risk his life for what! And his wife has done 5 years in the army because alll married men can not leave there work at work and there wifes play a massive part in getting them through it all.
