We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled and the Government of Canada, to the following:
Whereas:
1. Canadian researchers have established themselves as international leaders in a myriad of fields and these achievements should be recognized and celebrated.
2. Famous Canadian contributions include the Avro Arrow, the discovery of insulin by Sir Frederick Banting, the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell and the mapping of the human brain by Dr. Wilder Penfield.
3. Canadian research and innovation continues to contribute to the quality of life of Canadians and the international community alike.
a. In health care, Canadian researchers may find a cure for many forms of cancer with their finding that inexpensive chemical dichloroacetic acid (DCA) has a much larger implication by significantly shrinking cancerous tumours in mice. Canadian researchers were also at the forefront during the height of the SARS epidemic, leading the way to diagnostic testing and potentially a vaccine one day.
b. Canadian technological contributions include the Canadarm on the space shuttle, the weather station aboard the Phoenix Mars lander, and the worlds smallest quantum dots, leading the way to more energy efficient computers.
4. These are just a few examples of the contributions that Canadian research has made to the lives of Canadians and the international community. Sharing these stories will help Canadians better understand, support and be proud of the strong research performed right here in Canada.
Therefore, your petitioners call upon the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled and the Government of Canada to declare a National Day for Canadian Research, whereby one specific day each year will be dedicated to increasing the awareness of Canadian research and its contribution to Canadians and the international community.

- The creation of this day will help support and recognize the acheivements of researchers in Canada. It will show we value Canadian research and will also help create a more cohesive scientific community within Canada.
