Dear President Bush,
We the undersigned on the enclosed petition, would like to respectfully request the President of the United States to sign a National Tartan Day Presidential Proclamation to recognize April 6th of each year as a National Holiday Observance. This national holiday observance would be similar to Flag Day, thus placing National Tartan Day on the official United States of America calendar.
On April 7, 1997, the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 155 and on March 9, 2005, the House of Representatives passed House Resolution 41. These two Congressional Resolutions officially designate April 6 of each year as National Tartan Day recognizing the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish-Americans.
Scottish-Americans have played a key role in the founding and growth of the United States. Contributions made by Scottish-Americans have led to America's eminence in the fields of science, technology, medicine, government, politics, economics, architecture, literature, media, and visual and performing arts.
The Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320. Over 450 years later, the American Declaration of Independence was modeled in part on that inspirational document. In fact, almost half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent and nine of the Governors of the original 13 States were of Scottish ancestry.
April the 6th Tartan Day is indeed a significant day for all Americans; To honor all of those of Scottish ancestry who have had an impact on America in the present and the past.
