Petition to New York City Members of Congress
Please stop hurting New York City residents for the benefit of tax payers in other states. The current tax system defines people as rich/middle class/poor based on absolute revenue tests and fails to recognize the cost of living. New York City is the one of if not the most expensive cities in the nation, every tax increase that fails to recognize cost of living differences tends to penalize New York City and other metropolitan areas. President Obama defined people as rich if the earn over $250,000, that is clearly true for many regions in the country, but not New York. What is egregious is many people who earn $100,000 in other regions of the country have higher standards of living than New Yorkers who earn over $200,000. Yet those who are living large on less than $100,000 get tax breaks and New Yorkers with lower quality of life will see their taxes be increased. This will be further exacerbated by some of the tax increases being proposed to pay for universal health-care. When considering new tax increases maybe we can apply equity in handing them out and look to create a tax base based on cost of livings, you were able to do this for mortgage qualification levels jumbo conforming mortgages surely you can do it to make the tax code more equitable.

Thank in advance for taking action,
The Taxpayers of New York City
