United Airlines proudly announced a policy of charging fat passengers double if they "spill" into the seat next to them.
They say they received 700 complaints last year (out of 80 million passengers carried) from people who did not like having a fat person sit next to them and perhaps take up some of their seat space.
I am convinced that the 700 fat seatmates who didn't complain were not too happy about the situation, either. People in fat pride community have decided to try and beat that 700 complaints statistic.
We believe in one person, one ticket. I'm writing to ask you and the people you know to complain to United about this costly and discriminatory targeting of one demographic group. If this policy stands, it means fat people have less right to interstate air travel than other people. Everybody deserves a safe and comfortable chair on an airplane, at an affordable price!

- Every human being has a right to participate in interstate air travel. The responsibility of serving customers of all sizes is the cost of doing business in today's modern world and that cost should not come at the expense of any one group of individuals.

- If you really want to address the actual problem, it's seat sizes overall. Not just fat folks but anyone who's bigger than a hummingbird has a problem fitting in the average coach airline seat. That's because in the interests of money, airlines have decided to ignore the real world and install seats that in no way reflect the average size of their actual customers. Seats need to be made larger, or at least a section should be made available in every passenger class for those passengers needing more space - whether it's because you're a fat person, a person with medical equipment or child needs, or just a really big guy - how many of you know guys who are 6 foot 4 and complain about how small those seats are? I hear it ALL the time. Airlines are in trouble because they flatly ignore the real problems in favour of desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy. They need to learn that their business is suffering because THEY SUCK, not because WE WHINE. Enough is enough!

- I feel like having larger passengers pay extra for being larger is obscene. It's like charging an individual for putting their arm on your arm rest...

- This really is outrageous. Airline seats are designed for folks who are very small, but the reality is that the average American is simply not going to fit into those seats comfortably. Calling people fat because you use an antiquated design, and punishing them by charging them double is wrong.

- I want all of us fat and thin to enjoy the basic human dignity of having a comfortable and affordable chair to sit in when we fly. I want all of the airlines to figure out how to make money while respectfully accommodating all of us; it shouldn't be that difficult!

- This policy discriminates against all women (whose center of gravity is generally the hips), not just against fat people. This needs to end!

- I do not believe it is fair to single a person out merely because of his or her size.

- The number of people who are too fat to fit in airplane seats is miniscule. A better policy would be to not charge those people for the extra seat. The good will such a policy would generate would far outweigh the costs to the airline. The thin people who get upset about being seated next to someone who is that fat would be happy. The fat people themselves would be more comfortable and thus happy. The airline smells like a rose. It would be a win for everyone.

- Legally, airlines sell a trip, not a seat, which is why they can double-book. It makes no legal sense to charge for two "trips" on the same plane at the same time.

- One person, one ticket. It really is that simple. Bigotry will not prosper if we have anything to say about it.

- This policy is unfair and discriminatory. If 60\% of the US population are fat, isn't it time businesses started catering to us instead of this constant lazy dismissal of our needs?

- Half the population is fat. You are alienating half the population. Why not make all seats bigger. Everybody HATES airplane travel due to cramped space. All seats should be first class size/type seats anyhow.

- I will choose another carrier as long as United maintains this policy. Instead of discriminating, try accomodating -- instead of losing customers, you'll gain the respect and loyalty of countless customers who are fed up with cramped conditions and hateful policies such as this one.

- This policy discriminates against people of size and women in particular due to the differences in weight distribution. Your 700 complaints is equal to 1/1000th of 1\% of the passengers traveling on your airline during that same period of time. Requiring a person of size to puchase two seats is not a solution to this situation. Trying to sit in two seats is not comfortable or pleasant which you claim is your priority. You need to make your seats wider and stop discriminating against people of size!
