Dear Okemos High School Administrators and Board of Education,
Recently a new more restrictive rule regarding cell phone usage was put into effect at Okemos High School. There has been a dramatic increase in detentions and cell phone confiscations. While a part of these detentions and other forms of discipline have been effective and for good reason, there is still a large majority of unreasonable and non-negotiable detentions for cell phone use.
We the undersigned believe the following;
Responsible cell phone usage means:
Cell Phones can be used during lunch.
Cell Phones can be used in-between classes.
Cell Phones cannot be used after the second bell, or in other words, during class.
Cell Phones shall remain on VIBRATE.
If a Cell Phone is heard, the owner shall receive a detention. Multiple violations will result in a Saturday school. Again, cell phones must remain on vibrate.
Any use of cell phones at all during class shall result in a detention.
Detentions should be handed out to those breaking the above listed rules, along with any resistance towards the rules or the authority giving out detention. By following these rules, students can still have the ability to use their cell phones responsibly without impacting teachers or their classrooms.
Cell Phones should not be taboo. They are a part of todays society, intertwined within Okemos High School students lives. Giving out detentions for students sending a quick text message in-between classes to their parent on what time they should be picked up should NOT be detention worthy. Texting other students and/or other people during a class should result in a detention.
We are asking that you review your policies on cell phone usage within Okemos High School. We wish you would see us as humans, instead of just students. Allowing us a time during the day to use our phones will result in more responsible use and fewer detentions.

- Any Suggestions?
- Any kind of change in Okemos works in really, really small baby steps. If this is too much for the administration to handle, maybe ask for less?

- How would this rule help?
- There are some students who live 30 minutes to an hour away from the school, that should be able to inform their parents in between classes if a practice has been cancled or if they're plans have been altered.

- Last year, my sister made an attempt to contact me during school. I didn't check my phone because I knew I would get in trouble. I later found out that it was because two friends of ours were killed in a motorcycle accident, and I missed the funeral.
- How would this rule help?
- Students need to be allowed to contact family members in the event of an emergency.
- Have you gotten an unreasonable detention?
- Freshman year, a "friend" of mine turned my phone on when I was out of the room. They then called me during class, and my phone was confiscated. I never get in trouble, and I cried alot.

- why doesn't the school crack down on drugs and sex in the halls rather than focusing on cells and changing the chief logo? cells are gonna be used regardless of any rules. it will be just like the dress code policy, unaddressed
- How would this rule help?
- It won't. Kids will do it anyway.
- Have you gotten an unreasonable detention?
- I am a parent and think kids just need to be smart about and teachers not tolerate in class usage.
