The OSAA is considering taking away the team competition at the State Meet and making cross country an individual sport. Anybody who has ever run cross knows that it's a team sport.

The proposal would likely make it so that the only way to get to the State Meet would be through an individual qualification process - effectively eliminating the team competition. This would be extremely detrimental to the future growth of the sport in the State of Oregon.

    • I was one of the top finnishers at the OSAA state meet for both Cross Country and Track and went on to run at the University of Montana, but I wouldn't have run had cross country not been a team sport.

    • I have a son running track and field and XC at Western Oregon University. I have three children in Oregon Public Schools. Two are XC TEAM members and one is still in Kindergarten but cannot wait until the day he is a member of the Philomath XC Team. If you have ever followed a high school team from the first day of practice until the end of the season you would have NO doubt that it is and will always be a team sport. They encourage one another, cheer for each other, support one another, help each other when injured, step up to run in races when needed-----is this not a team? Philomath Girls XC team has qualified for the State Meet 30 years in a row as of last year and the boys are at 28 years. My children maintain healthy, active, lifestyles looking forward to being a part of this team. Do not think of taking this away from them.

    • As a coach and former high school and collegiate cross country athlete, I know how important the team aspect is to each individual's motivation and success. Abolishing the team competition would remove one of the vital components of the sport of cross country. Please reconsider changing the nature of this sport.

    • Cross Country has always been, and should continue to be a team sport. When you take away the team aspect of cross country you take away the true meaning of the sport. Please reconsider your decision, for the good of your athletes and your organization.

    • Eliminating the team component of Cross Country is to denature the sport. At all levels, teamwork and commitment to one's teammates define the purpose of the activity. A championship with individual qualification standards cannot rightfully call itself cross country, but rather a chronologically misplaced track event, contested in the mud. Oregon has consistently led the country in our ability to produce top runners, deliver successful Cross Country teams, and cultivate passion for the sport. I would be immensely disappointed to see the OSAA injure our running culture by ceasing to contest true Cross Country.

    • The one and only time I qualifed or competed at the state meet was with my team my senior year. Being there with my team made the expereince second to none. Every one of us had the opportunity to run in college and we probably wouldn't have had such an opporunity had we not qualified as a team that year!

    • XC/Asst. T&F Coach, West Salem HS --- qualifying for state XC as a team is a very special experience that allows numerous hs athletes their only real shot at competing at state. That in itself is what makes XC such a unique and memorable lifetime experience for so many athletes and their families. To take that away would be a crime. I was under the impression that these type of hs experiences was what the OSAA was supposed to be all about.

    • Cross country is a team sport, one that motivates many kids to participate. Each runner on the team has an equal chance to affect the score - where else does this happen? XC is not just a one-event track meet. Every kid who has ever run cross country will tell you that the most important part of the whole experience is being a contributing part of the team. You miss the whole point when you turn it into an individual only event.

    • XC is both a team and individual sport. don't take away the team aspect. it teaches HS participants lessons they will take with them throughout life.
