Petition for Contact Visits with Death-Sentenced Prisoners

Dear Sirs:

Death-sentenced prisoners may be on Death Row for many years before their appeals are decided. The State of Ohio does not permit death-sentenced prisoners to have contact visits with their families until a few days before execution.

We understand the following to be true:

1. A number of Southern states including Louisiana and Virginia permit family members to have contact visits with their loved ones throughout the prisoners time on Death Row.

2. At the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, maximum security prisoners in general population may have up to twelve (12) contact visits a year whereas death-sentenced prisoners are not allowed any contact visits.

3. Death-sentenced prisoners believe that it might contribute to their good behavior in prison, and thus strengthen their arguments for clemency, if contact visits were permitted.

The request for contact visits for death-sentenced prisoners has been before you for many months. Many executions in Ohio are possible in the near future. Please grant this petition. A HUG IS A HUMAN RIGHT!

- This U.S. Government should not have to be told it's inhumane to promote death for revenge. Nor should they be told it's inhumane to keep prisoners on death row, from having contact visits with their families. This government shouldn't have to be told a lot of things. But, who ever said we have a sane government, federal, state or local.

- We are suppose to treat prisoners as human beings. Everyone needs to feel the touch of love and hope. When you deprive a human being of hope you steal his soul. What if a person is found to later be innocent and no contact can cause mental poblems. Give these men the right to human contact, it may be all they have. wandavaldes@webtv.net

- For those who are of authority, perhaps putting the shoe on the other foot should be what you do. How much better would you do if you were on Death Row and were permitted to have physical contact visits with loved ones? Is it fair to state that the inmates "deserve" to not have something that is a human right? Is it fair to take away the right of their loved ones to be with the inmate in their lifetime that remains? When one opens their eyes to all sides of life, they begin to fully understand and appreciate the simplist of things: human contact. Please, just take a few moments to reflect on your own life and then consider the possibilities of multiple contact visits per year for Ohio's Death Row Inmates. Thank you for considering what those who are free take for granted on a daily basis, a HUG.
