In recent weeks, Occidental College has announced new housing policies. Amongst other things, it has been decided that starting with the class of 2013 all students will have to live on campus through their Junior year.

This is the latest in a long line of policies that were made without the input of students. When a policy is announced that will affect the lives of the student population, the student body should be given a role in shaping the policy.

We, the undersigned members of the student body of Occidental College, oppose this policy. We believe it is a student's right to choose whether to live on or off campus. These rights should not be rescinded due to one's class year. More importantly, as this policy will affect future students at Occidental, we demand that we are consulted before policies such as this one are implemented.

We simply ask for the following:
*A cancelation of this policy that shall force juniors to live on campus beginning with the class of 2013.
*That all future decisions that shall affect student life be presented to the student body for approval before they become college policy.

    • I realize that Occidental just wants to make more money given the poor economy, but this is not the way to do it. This new rule greatly affects student life, not to mention it poses SERIOUS problems for greek organizations that risk losing their houses because they cannot fill them.

    • I can honestly say I would have reconsidered attending Oxy if such a policy was in place when I was a first year, and I certainly would have transferred. Are you really earning more money if you lose students due to a housing choice?

    • Because of the mandatory on campus housing, it is very difficult for lower income students to afford to come to Occidental. On campus housing alone costs roughly 12 thousand dollars!!! How are we expected to pay that three years in a row along with the costs of attending classes here?? Also, by the age of 21, students should not be forced to live under the rules of RHA and should be given the freedom to live where they want while attending our "liberal" school.

    • Occidental College's unique allowances to student freedom are an attractive feature within the body of liberal arts colleges. confroming occidental to the residence life experience of other college, has the opposite effect of making Oxy stand apart form the crowd. Please keep oxy an unique place for Students to grow and develop under the collaboration of faculty staff and the students themselves.

    • The long-term effect of this policy would be devastating, especially for Greek Life at Oxy. If only seniors can live off-campus, Greek organizations cannot fill their houses and pay off rent, which will ultimately lead them to sell their houses. Oxy should value Greek Life and various off-campus houses, not find ways to eliminate them.
