County Executive Jack Johnson and members of the Prince George's County Council have presented a proposal to the Maryland State Department of Education for a waiver of the "Maintenance of Effort" for funding our school budget at least at the rate it was funded this year. County Executive Johnson is planning on taking an additional 23.6 million out of the Board of Education budget on top of the $36 million in cuts that have already been proposed. This may lead to a reduction in services for our students, increased class size and elimination of core classroom reforms. Prince George's County has taken major steps in raising test scores, and was key in helping Maryland earn a #1 ranking in Education by two nationally recognized publications. We cannot turn back!!!

Join PGCEA in the fight to let the County Executive and other Prince George's County Elected Officials know that you do not support this plan by signing our petition and visiting our website: www.pgcea.org for more information and activities supporting educators and education in Prince George's County.

    • The class size in our schools are too large for students to focus and for teachers to conduct high quality lessons. Please put our students first.

    • Special Education students in this County are making unprecendeted gains for the first time in history. This is attributable in part to the increase in funding towards special education services, professional development and training for special educators, and other vital programs that require funding. This population cannot afford to regress, which is sure to occur should the funding be decreased or cut all together.
