On June 22nd, 2004, a cruel and needless slaughter of pigeons was initiated at the 1550 BrickellApartments complex in Miami, Florida. Truly Nolen (pest controllers) was commissioned by the management, Green Properties, to exterminate pigeons with an unknown poisonous substance, possibly Avitrol.
One individual who took in two birds, hoping to save them, reports:
I heard some noise coming from the carrier they were inone was upside down and started having
seizures. God, that was so horrible. She was making heartbreaking noises. I called the vet right away, he said to bring the bird now.
The rescuer attempted to administer an activated charcoal solution to the bird, but its beak was clamped so firmly due to the fits, it could not be opened. This pigeons condition was critical, the poison having caused grave kidney damage. The rescuer continues:
I got home exhausted, from stress. I went to check on the other bird and found him dead. I don't know what happened to him. He was fine for four hours and when we left he was OK. His mate had the seizures within two hours of being here.the look in her eyes is the most heartbreaking look I ever saw. God help us all, this world is just getting too bad.
Some facts:
Lethal control of pigeons brings no long-term benefit except in lucrative repeat business for pestcontrollers, since other birds will quickly fill the gap which has been left. Humane deterrents and barriers to prevent access to roosting and nesting places are the most effective method of control, giving long term results from an initial outlay.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control has stated that the risk of anyone contracting a disease from pigeons in the U.S.A. is extremely rare, contrary to the misconceptions propagated by the ignorant and those with a vested interest in perpetuating them.
Bird poisons, as used in control of pigeons, are non-discriminatory. They may also kill protected bird species, other wildlife, pets and potentially - children who may accidentally ingest the substance. In the above case, one pigeon had actually expelled some of the substance inside the rescuers home. In addition, orphaned nestlings will starve to death - an inhumane fate - without their parents.
The use of Avitrol, specifically, has been banned by legislation from use in New York City.
We, the undersigned, therefore request the aforementioned authorities to examine closely the application of such inhumane methods of pigeon control, with a view to banning the use of poisonous substances for this purpose.

- This is horrible, I can't believe people think it is okay to just go out and kill anything because they preceive it as a pest.

- Pigeons occupy an available ecolilogical niche like all animals. The buildings and bridges etc.. are "rock cliffs and pillars" that look like their natural habitat to them. The "Rock Pigeon" which is native to the Meditterian is occupying habitat that is not required by any other wildlife. A more balenced approch to the pigeons being in better balance would be to stop feeding the pigeons gradually, erecting public lofts that can be monitored by someone and replace real eggs with wooded eggs, introducing a preditor (like pereigan falcon) to help keep the pigeon colony healthy by the falcon harvesting the weak and less healthy pigeons.

- Are pigeons a threat in any way shape or form? Why do they need to be exterminated? They live outside, they're peaceful creatures and have never caused problems. I have a few that walk back and forth on my window sill and they do not bother a soul. They have a right to live. Who are we to decide the fate of any living creatures existence?

- Pigeons are awe-inspiring in mating, breeding, incubating, and caring for their young: they mate for life; both female and male make "pigeon milk". Each takes turns incubating the egg(s).. up to 18 hours at a time w/o eating, eliminating, or leaving the nest!, and both feed the hatchling(s); both will take turns teaching the offspring to fly. Observing this - and more - totally blew me away! I am blessed to have been a part of this if only as a videographer and observer. Why would we want to destroy these awesome and beautiful creatures? and in such a painful and disgusting manner? I've heard of programs that introduce pigeon birth control as a solution. Now, *that* I could get behind.

- We dont understand why people would want to hurt these beautiful creatures. they fuel our lives and are a marvel to watch. people should be helping them to breed rather than killing them. We own a breeding house for pigeons, lizards and rats, the considered vermin of this planet, and we have never seen such caring and loved animals. keep up the good work Pigeons.com

- This is morbid and cruel! Pigeons may not be the favorite animals of most people, but they are to some! They are living creatures and they have feelings too! All of God's creatures should be protected, be it tigers, dogs, or pigeons.
