To: The United States Congress,
Petition: We the undersigned respectfully request a Thorough and All Encompassing Independent Federal Investigation of the Past, Current, and Ongoing Planned E.I. DuPont Company Related Environmental Clean-up Activities and the Overall Environmental and Health Conditions related to this in the Borough of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey Over the past 25 years and we are of the opinion that this needs to be expedited in a "Time is of The Essence" manner and with forthwith urgency due to the health risks involved to the people of Pompton Lakes and to any visitors.
Additional Support Statement:
We request that this "Federal" Task Force be independent from that of the NJDEP and/or the USEPA members and to consist of a bona fide non-partisan committee appointed by the United States Congress and upon its completion all results of this investigation are to be fully disclosed to the public. We further request that the results of this said investigation should appropriately be aired on such media venues as nation wide television, published in major newspapers, and reported over the internet as well.
We believe that this said "Independently Expedited and Completed Federal Investigation Report and Subsequent Degree of Full Disclosure to the Public" may in and of itself very likely answer many pertinent questions including whether or not a USEPA Superfund Site Designation is appropriate and in order in Pompton Lakes Borough or whether or not the past and current NJDEP managed DuPont Clean-up process has been and/or is efficiently and appropriately handled.
The fact has come to our attention that there has for some time in the past several months and culminating in the latter part of 2009 and in early 2010, and is currently still creating considerable ongoing complexities caused by a substantial question in and around the Pompton Lakes Area pertaining to whether or not the past NJDEP supervisory activities over the DuPont Contamination Clean-up process has been acceptably appropriate or whether the USEPA should justifiably step in and designate the affected area(s) as a so called "Superfund Site" and to be listed on the National Priorities List. This and other past experiences has led us to be of the opinion that "We the People" are now in serious need of this Independent Federal Investigation to be expedited and reported to the public and for the public good and the safeguard of the public's health and welfare.
After more than 20 years of supposed DuPont Clean-up procedures there are apparently still to this date and time real and genuine environmental health hazards existing in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and while it is reportedly a fact that a considerably large TCE and PCE Contaminated Groundwater Plume Area affecting 400 homes or more exists, and such other factors exist including but not necessarily limited to such as a reported 50,000 cubic yards of hazardous mercury sediment and other pollutants sits in Pompton Lake, and it is furthermore reported to be a sad fact that this estimated 50,000 cubic yards of mercury sediment in Pompton Lake borders a Public Middle School in the said borough and that Pompton Lake has been used as a Back up Water Supply to Some Various Areas Within the Northern New Jersey Region.
Furthermore, there has recently been a health department report disclosing that Some Types of Cancers are of Atypically Elevated Rates in the DuPont Contamination Affected Area(s) in Pompton Lakes. Enough time has been wasted. Let's not waste any more time simply "debating" over waste clean-up while many people may be at serious risk to their health. In this case wasting valuable time may in turn make a further waste of the invaluable quality of life! There is a further question of the efficiency and adequacy of the vapor mitigation systems which have been installed and which are in an ongoing process of being offered to be installed into residential properties located within the TCE and PCE Designated ground water Vapor Plume. There is a further question of the degree of risk to the general public who interact on an everyday basis or periodically within the public areas near the outsides of the properties with these vapor ventilation systems installed and operating to vent these hazardous fumes into the open air. Additionally, there still today exists a serious question of the possible considerable degree of contaminants which may in fact still exist on the DuPont Multi-acre Site in Pompton Lakes after 15 to 20 years of this DuPont "Clean-up" Process and which has been for many years and currently still to today is supervised by the NJDEP.
Let us get this official Independent Federal Investigation process expedited forthwith, and then let the chips fall where they may! The public's health and welfare are at risk in Pompton Lakes Borough with every day that goes by and in the absence of adequate resolve. It clearly appears that the residents of Pompton Lakes Borough need your honorable assistance in order for this long standing environmental problem to justifiably and adequately get resolved and in a satisfactory manner. Thank you.

- The neglect that has been allowed to happen in Pompton Lakes is a crime and needs to be corrected ASAP! Over 20 years, no clean up and still no end in site!

- Over a century of pollution! In the past two decades, our local government officials have not held DuPont's feet to the fire and the result equals no true clean-up of this horrible contamination problem in Pompton Lakes! Over 450 homes are affected that we know of at this time. These residents live in fear, distress and their quality of life has suffered dramatically. This investigation needs to happen now for all the hard working people that are suffering for too many years in our community!

- The residents of Pompton Lakes need to have control over the cleanup of the DuPont Works site and toxic TCE groundwater plume, not the polluter. It's time to change that and give the families a chance to stand up aganist this multibillion dollar corporation. A full federal investigation needs to be done by the USEPA, taking control of the site from NJDEP, who is clearly just an apologist for DuPont.

- The more disturbing news that I learn of this contamination, the more outraged I become! The mayor and local government officials have done absolutely nothing during the last two decades, except completely ignore and cover up such a serious life threatening issue for the Pompton Lakes residents. Over a century of pollution destroying the well being of numerous families and their children! Not to mention, the huge investments the hard working people have put into their properties and homes, and their values have severely decreased. Many people have died, and more people are being stricken with deadly cancer from the contamination! It's so unfair that all these families have to live in fear and have their quality of lives jeopardized! I personally do not reside in Pompton Lakes, but I do have a few close friends who do. How many more people, or children have to die before there is a proper clean-up and federal investigation?
