On June 4, 2009 the Recording Academy (the organization behind the Grammy Awards) announced that it was eliminating Best Polka Recording from over 100 categories limiting it to only the Best Traditional Folk and Best Contemporary Folk categories. The New York Times reported the reason was to ensure the awards process remains representative of the current musical landscape.
This is political prejudice at its very best. How can you eliminate a genre that is older than Blues, Rock and Jazz?
Lets get the attention of the Academy and get them to reverse this discriminating decision. Sign the petition below and let your voice be heard.

- Eliminating Polka as a category eliminates a genre of music that has been around since approximately 1835. It represents the culture and heritage of millions of people. While Polka does not generate the revenue as do other forms of music this does not constitute a legitimate reason for its removal as a category for a Grammy. To the contary, those who create music for the sake of music and not economic reward deserve recognition. It is my opinion that the Academy's action, in this instance, is tandamount to economic discrimination. No matter what actions the Academy takes there will always be Polka music and people of all ages will still enjoy dancing the Polka.
