A CITIZEN PETITION TO SAVE PERRIGO SPRINGS WOODLANDS

We the undersigned Redmond residents, petition Redmond City Council Members and Commissioners to place the highest priority on preserving 20+ acres of permanent, open green space surrounding Perrigo Springs. Such land is used for parks, walking trails, historic sites, gateway views, watershed, wetland, and wildlife protection.

This mature, conifer forest contains streams and wetlands and is utilized by Redmond High School Students and citizens as an environmental laboratory for the study and protection of priority species such as the pileated woodpecker and others. The forest provides open space for a densely populated area, and is a scenic, wildlife habitat that preserves the original, rural character of Redmond for future generations.

WE ENCOURAGE REDMOND CITY COUNCIL TO DENY APPROVAL FOR DEVELPMENT IN THIS SENSITIVE AREA, AND TO USE ALL AVAILABLE METHODS FOR PRESERVING THE 20+ ACRES AROUND PERRIGO SPRINGS AS PARK LAND IN PERPETUITY.

These methods include accepting land dedications, utilizing zoning tools, and authorizing of federal, state, county and local funding sources to complement City efforts.

    • Please realize this area is used extensively as a recreation area for neighbors and a home for much wildlife such as woodpeckers, frogs and deer. We understand more homes mean more money to Redmond but this place is truly a godsend that should stay for future generations. I encourage the Council members and all involved to take a walk through these woods and see how blessed we are. Once houses are put in, we lose this forever.

    • There is already lots of erosion on the projected sewer line hill, I shudder to think what will happen when trees and brush are removed there. We need to preserve this precious land and save Perrigo Springs Woodlands!

    • This is a very important recreational outlet that I and other use. Further the vegetation on the steep slope is helping ensure that there are no landslides that would destroy our homes down below. There is little doubt that this area should be designated a park.

    • How many accesible, true woodlands are still existing today in Redmond or the Eastside? ... Very few, if any, like this one! Perrigo Springs Woodlands is a spiritual place where you can walk down a soft earthen path hearing only the "pitter patter" of rain- not even feeling it! The woods embrace you on your walk as you find solidtude and peace with Nature. If the City Council must rape this rare woodland to create homes (& tax revenues), please find a better reason than "more of the same" ... 30 Burnstead spec mini-mansions for the well-heeled. We will fight to preserve this "piece of heaven", but if the City Council insists on raping Perrigo Springs Woodland then consider AFFORDABLE housing for our teachers, police, service workers, etc. Million Dollar Burnsteads do NOT do our wonderfull woodland ecosytem justice! Think hard Council. This may be your last chance to do something really good. We have a Redmond treasure. Walk the path. You'll see!

    • I have lived here 40 years and 30 of them in the same house here on Education Hill.. I have watched the land disappear and it it such a sad sight..makes me sick..Is Redmond that greedy that they need to build more and more and more until we've exhausted every natural resource available to us? Say no!!!

    • I feel we should keep the woodlands untainted by any construction. Though my husband has considered modest, attractive affordable houseing as a secondary option to Park Trails, I prefer we keep the land free of any development whatsoever. This land is incredibly beautiful. I wish I had a recorder to tape the music of the birds, frogs, western red squirrels, and piliated woodpeckers! I found a website, www.redfin.com, that shows a satellite photo of Redmond. If you find it, look for the "crescent of green". That's our neighborhood woodlands. Without it, the sattelite photo would be mostly brown colored! The urban boundary is a good idea. But, let's pick the right place to build houses!!!
