We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you reject any measures to shut down, close, or otherwise disrupt electric generation at Indian Point for the following reasons:
Whereas Indian Point has provided safe, clean, reliable and economical electricity to New York and the surrounding area for over 30 years.
Whereas Indian Point produces 19 percent of the electricity required to meet the demand of the City of New York and that of its major suburbs.
Whereas the record of injury or fatality both to nuclear plant workers and to the general public due to operating nuclear power plants registers near the bottom of overall industry standards.
Whereas nuclear power does not produce any emissions that contribute to global warming and air, water, or any other short or long term pollution to the environment.
Whereas the critics of Indian Point are using the tragic events of September 11th to terrorize the public and to advance their own agenda by trying to convince the public of the myth that a nuclear power plant can explode like an atomic bomb.
Whereas Indian Point employs over 1600 permanent and contract employees and creates commerce, revenue, and employment for countless other individuals both in the tri-state area and throughout the county.
Whereas the critics of nuclear power are a small disproportionate percentage of the overall population as attested to by the following signatures.

- Nuclear power is a vital component of this nation's and region's power supply. Its clean , safe, and helps keep us from being overly dependent on middle eastern countries for our source of energy. Recent criticisms on the safety of nuclear power and the Indian Point Energy Center by a vocal anti-nuclear minority are based in large part on exaggerations and outright falsehoods concerning the nature of the risks associated with nuclear power. These groups are purposely attempting to create fear in the public to support their cause to shut down the Indian Point Energy Center through the use of exaggerations, misinformation, and falsehoods. It will be incumbent upon our elected representatives at all levels of government to deal with facts when making decisions regarding the future of nuclear power and the Indian Point Energy Center. To do anything less will result in the loss of critically needed generation capacity and the most environmentally friendly method of generating electricity available.

- I find it inexcusable that certain individuals would take advantage of the fear and terror created by the tragic destruction of the World Trade Towers. These individuals do not present all the facts. They are simply using this disgusting act of violence to further their cause, while continuing to terrorize the public. I worked at the Indian Point Station for 15 years. Safety of the Plant has always been the number one priority.

- As a Professional Engineer I understand the significant advantages that Nuclear Power offers over the alternatives. It is clean and safe. Those who are raising issues regarding its continued operation have other adjenda. They are not recognized as credible authorities by the mainstream technical community.

- Compare this countries most horrific commercial nuclear accident (TMI) with any other industrial accident for an ordinary year and you will probably be shocked. Not one fatality or even a worker becoming ill at TMI. This is the most regulated industry and the safest, with a payback of an essential and vital commodity, ELECTRICITY. And as far as training goes the Amerian Medical Association should adopt our standards and thereby reducing the acknowledged deaths due to medical errors (as many as 100,000 per year).

- Petitions don't determine whether or not nuclear power is safe - scientists, engineers, and regulatory groups do. Nuclear power IS safe because the people who know the nuclear industry and Indian Point have determined it is safe, NOT because people have voted it to be safe. It's a shame that it has to come to this to keep a safe, reliable source of power a viable entity in this country. Why don't the people who are so concerned about the safety of the public, go to Bhopal and investigate the integrity of the chemical plants there!!!!
