The petition of the undersigned shows:
We the people, the undersigned, wish to adopt a bill that will be introduced that enables homosexual couples all the rights that go along with a legal marriage but in their civil unions whereof a differentiated form of the legislation occurs whereas homosexuals commit to one another through our court system rather than a so called elevated power such as God or a Messiah.
Opposition to gay civil unions complain that the term marriage belongs to only a man and a woman and as such civil unions too closely resemble this perception. All the homosexual population are looking for is equal rights. So, why don't we, as a society, allow them those rights? Every single right and 'perk' that is given to married couples such as recognition should herinafter be provided to homosexuals to the exclusion of God or Messiah being witnesseth. If this is fulfilled, both sides of the argument can be satisfied and equal. This is Australia where all people are supposed to be treated fairly. Obviously there are people who want to retain the original meaning of the word marriage, so it's time for a compromise.
With the new era transpiring, we the people undersigned urge for a new revolution. Australia has made a large jump forward in their fight against inequality, but we still have a large issue at hand, one that must be resolved before Australia can move on and tackle the next socially structured issues that have caused an enormous degree of inequality and exclusion.
So we the people undersigned beg for this proposal to be granted to the extent whereof implementation of a bill that allows homosexuals to have civil unions is initiated.
Stop the inequality. Stop the hate. Stop the division in Australia.

- Homosexual couples should not be discriminated against because they are homosexual. We are all human, we all love, and many wish to form committed partnerships. This creates a more stable society. And that benefits everyone.

- Please consider ending the current heterosexist legislation because the love that I share with my chosen partner is just as valid and real as the love that anyone else shares with their partners, regardless of what the politics argue.

- Unfortunately this year my partner of 5years and I had to travel to our more liberal neighbouring country of New Zealand in order to perform our much longed for civil union. It appears that New Zealand's legislation is far more advanced than that of Australia's. I think Australia has much to change in the way of equality. I must question the value of my Australian citizenship. How can I be a citizen of Australia if I do not receive the full list of rights available. After spending time living in different European nations it is clear to me that a country so advanced as Australia is still so far behind. Not only are rights for homosexuals far more equal in the United Kingdom, but such legislation has assisted in the change of public opinion towards homosexuals in the UK. For once I want to be proud of the nation where I was born. To the Australian Government; make this happen, make me proud to be Australian and make all other homosexuals proud of our fine country. Legalise Civil Unions and stop the hatred.
