Mother Redcaps Tavern is a traditional old Dublin pub, situated near Christchurch Cathedral. Furnished in wood, it has a unique charm and a warm and friendly atmosphere. In addition to serving the local community for many years, the pub has a great tradition of live music, promoting both local and international acts.

The Planning Department of Dublin City Council have recently granted permission for the demolition of Mother Redcaps and the building of yet another high-rise apartment complex.

The signatories of this petition wish to express their objection to this development. While the applicants may have conformed to the Council's requirements with respect to advertising the application, we feel that little or no effort was really made to bring this to the attention of the general public. Awareness is only now growing in the aftermath of the permission being granted. We ask the Council to listen to the people of Dublin and rescind it's original decision. It would be a great shame to allow another landmark of the city to be trampled under the feet of our property developers.

    • Why don't they knock out one of those dirty, noisy, useless pubs full of obnoxious drunk tourists in the middle of templebar instead?

    • Knocking the venue is a bloody disgrace and did the council learn nothing from their previous decision to build over An Beal Bocht. Soon there will be none of the old venues left.

    • Mother Redcaps is a building of character, the scene of many a fine gig and concert. At a time in Dublin where live venues are hard to come by, it is a mistake to knock it.

    • With its demolition another piece of this area's soul will be gone once for all! It's a shame.

    • The price we pay for 'progress' is too high. If it means that a beautiful and historic building must make way for more faceless accommodation in this city, then I will protest in the strongest terms. There is enough greed apparent in the everyday life of Dublin these days; where do the people go for arts and culture if we destroy the aesthetically beautiful soul of our once fine city?

    • As an US citizen, I am sickened that plans to demolish Mother Redcaps would even be considered. Not only is this place an historic landmark that has served generation upon generation, it is a place of friends and dreams.
