Support for the Library of Michigan

Within the genealogical community, the Library of Michigan has long been recognized as one of the premier state libraries in the country.

The cohesive Library of Michigan collection with over 180 years of Michigan history, literature and culture records and reflects the lives of not only those who remained to raise their families within the state but of millions more whose migration to other parts of the country left their footprints in the soil and records generated by their passage. Visitors come from all across the country to research at the Library of Michigan.

While we are aware of the budget crises in Michigan, we support every effort to keep the collection intact, provide free access to the entire collection and assure that it stays within state jurisdiction. We urge that all alternatives to disbanding the collection be explored. We view with dismay the prospect of scattering this unique collection for fear that it could never again be reassembled.

    • I'm sure the State of Michigan can trim their budget in areas less important. Try starting with the inflated salaries & bonuses of state officials.

    • The idea of closing the Library of Michigan and breaking up the genealogical collection shows a lack of respect for the people of the past, the present, and the future. I urge the Governor to rescind her executive order.

    • Besides being a short-sighted move in a state trying to improve tourism and diversify its economy, there must be dozens of empty buildings that could be renovated for less $ without destroying a building built specifically as a library.

    • Genealogical libraries hold our collective history; their great value is that we can visit one place and with skilled assistance, view the growth and progress of our nation as well as our families. Books scattered over many small libraries with no focus lose their relevance and power to illustrate the larger picture, and are at risk to be sold or discarded when funds to support them dwindle. Expert genealogical librarians tie together the threads of the books' contents, aiding researchers in gathering all the pieces to analyze and synthesize as they develop their answers. A library without expert librarians is a warehouse. Separating books, librarians, and access will set back education, economic growth, and the work of researchers far into the future. No one will be thanked for disabling this marvelous resource.

    • In this time of fiscal crisis, government officials need to carefully consider the impact of their actions. Closing a facility that not only helps preserve our state and national heritage but also attracts visitors to the area year round is not a wise decision.

    • The Genealogy collection is irreplacable, it should not be destroyed or disbanded in order to place her new commettee in its place which will cost the taxpayers more the the Library already does.Gov Granholm is only looking out for her own personal interest and not the best interest for the PEOPLE THAT SHE SERVES
