Support for the Library of Michigan
Within the genealogical community, the Library of Michigan has long been recognized as one of the premier state libraries in the country.
The cohesive Library of Michigan collection with over 180 years of Michigan history, literature and culture records and reflects the lives of not only those who remained to raise their families within the state but of millions more whose migration to other parts of the country left their footprints in the soil and records generated by their passage. Visitors come from all across the country to research at the Library of Michigan.
While we are aware of the budget crises in Michigan, we support every effort to keep the collection intact, provide free access to the entire collection and assure that it stays within state jurisdiction. We urge that all alternatives to disbanding the collection be explored. We view with dismay the prospect of scattering this unique collection for fear that it could never again be reassembled.

- Once a year, for a week I visit the Wisconsin Historical society on Univeristy of Wisconsin Madison campus. Great Collection, a million students on bike, mopeds, little to no parking - last year $15 a day in a ramp. The stacks are in many airless floors with copy machines located on the 1st floor. Lots of Mircofilm and new books in collection. Why not build another building for all these projects instead of taking away of the state library and historical museum.

- The historical collection contained within the State's library is just too invaluable to consider dispersing to various sites, in or out of our state. Please, please, please keep this profound information available to researchers who seek to keep our history alive.

- Every library closure is a great loss to all seeking family history AND a great loss of information about the community and state in which the persons lived. The info. should be kept in the best place for public access.

- This would be a criminal act to allow these items to be destroyed..in addition to the importance of the Libraries and Museums to the education of our citizens, young and old.

- The latest chapter in our Governor's stupidity is closing down Michigan's great library and history departments. When will Granholm leave? After bringing our state to it's knees? Go home to California!

- Please don't close, we should always keep our history for future generations. Once this history is lost it can probably never be recovered. Genealogy is the 2nd greatest past time pleasure.

- There has to be a way to stop any action to close the Library of Michigan. It is our heritage and should be left as is.

- Each year, many buses full of researchers go to the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne to research. Why? One of the reasons is that the State of Michigan was once foolish enough to get rid of lots of genealogical materials and Ft. Wayne scooped them up. Let's NOT repeat that foolish error and send our people elsewhere to research!

- A State without a Library is a sad, sad thing. It's such a wonderful resource, especially for genealogists, but also for the average citizen. Please don't do something you'll regret down the line.

- History and libraries must be saved for the future of all ages. My younger family members are just now learning of their roots and families. I always remember the opening line in one of my college books; "All history is prologue"!

- Nothing is as important as preserving our historical records. Our history and family stories are what made this country great and what gives each of us personal pride in the development and freedoms of the United States. Each and every state should preserve this information not just for researchers today, but for all future generations.
