Support for the Library of Michigan
Within the genealogical community, the Library of Michigan has long been recognized as one of the premier state libraries in the country.
The cohesive Library of Michigan collection with over 180 years of Michigan history, literature and culture records and reflects the lives of not only those who remained to raise their families within the state but of millions more whose migration to other parts of the country left their footprints in the soil and records generated by their passage. Visitors come from all across the country to research at the Library of Michigan.
While we are aware of the budget crises in Michigan, we support every effort to keep the collection intact, provide free access to the entire collection and assure that it stays within state jurisdiction. We urge that all alternatives to disbanding the collection be explored. We view with dismay the prospect of scattering this unique collection for fear that it could never again be reassembled.

- This is a way to save money? Sounds rather dubious to me.

- I am researching my family which has roots in Michigan. It should be illegal to close a library - and it is definitely immoral!

- What was achieved will NEVER be duplicated elsewhere if the Library of Michigan is destroyed. This would be an incalculable loss to genealogists and historians. In addition, I cannot see how any money will be saved if the Library contents must be dismantled, shipped elsewhere, and new construction paid for to prepare the Library for other uses. This is truly a stupid political decision.

- I agree that Library hours and services can be curtailed and restored in better times, but having important records handled by people who are not knowledgeable is not a good idea. I've known at least one organization here in Wisconsin that hired someone to handle family history information on a big scale. This person destroyed "old" records because they were OLD!!! This could very easily happen to the Michigan records. Prior investments in these records would be lost and most likely could never be recovered!

- If the current Govenor wants to save money for Michigan, let her take a pay cut rather than destroying this collection that took years to build.
