Support for the Library of Michigan
Within the genealogical community, the Library of Michigan has long been recognized as one of the premier state libraries in the country.
The cohesive Library of Michigan collection with over 180 years of Michigan history, literature and culture records and reflects the lives of not only those who remained to raise their families within the state but of millions more whose migration to other parts of the country left their footprints in the soil and records generated by their passage. Visitors come from all across the country to research at the Library of Michigan.
While we are aware of the budget crises in Michigan, we support every effort to keep the collection intact, provide free access to the entire collection and assure that it stays within state jurisdiction. We urge that all alternatives to disbanding the collection be explored. We view with dismay the prospect of scattering this unique collection for fear that it could never again be reassembled.

- A very foolish and ill-conceived move but typical of our politicians who have no sense of the past.

- I am a Michigan native and have found many one-of-a-kind treasures at the LOM in the past. I support the movement to keep the LOM open. It is an irreplaceable archive that deserves to remain open.

- The present center - Library, Archives and Museum should remain intact in the purpose-built building. The cost of closing, moving, storing and remodeling far outweighs the purported saving, and damages the image of Michigan.

- Although I represent Roscommon County , I also have/had relatives in Mecosta and Huron Counties. The loss of the library would be a disaster, since the local libraries also work thru MEL and it will close as well, eliminating any research (Genealogy or otherwise) at your local library.

- Ther must be other options than taking a reknowned collection donated by the people of Michigan and spreading it around so no one will ever be able to know the history of this great state.

- My family has lived in MI for over 150 years. I graduated from MSU. I left the state in 1982 because I could not find a job and ended up in IL. Much of my family remains in MI. As a former resident of MI, I was distraught to learn that such a great cultural and historical resource would be lost. I am willing to pay a fee to support & use such a fine resource. My children and I have visited the Museum several times and have loved it. MI cannot stand to lose another fine hidden resource.

- I have heard Governor Granholm over the years stress the fact that we have to provide educational opportunities for our young people or they will leave the state. One of the foundations of our educational system in the state has always been our libraries. The Library of Michigan houses the history of our state and its families (in a beautiful purpose-built building) as well as providing state-wide services. It should be kept intact.
