Support for the Library of Michigan

Within the genealogical community, the Library of Michigan has long been recognized as one of the premier state libraries in the country.

The cohesive Library of Michigan collection with over 180 years of Michigan history, literature and culture records and reflects the lives of not only those who remained to raise their families within the state but of millions more whose migration to other parts of the country left their footprints in the soil and records generated by their passage. Visitors come from all across the country to research at the Library of Michigan.

While we are aware of the budget crises in Michigan, we support every effort to keep the collection intact, provide free access to the entire collection and assure that it stays within state jurisdiction. We urge that all alternatives to disbanding the collection be explored. We view with dismay the prospect of scattering this unique collection for fear that it could never again be reassembled.

    • Closing the Michigan State Library is a short-sighted plan that will have far ranging long term repercussions for all residents of our state.

    • The Library of Michigan has always been one of my favorite research destinations. If it's dismantled, my research/tourist dollars will go to other states.

    • I have Michigan relatives and though I haven't started in on that branch of the family yet it would be so disappointing to lose this resource before I could even look at it

    • My ancestors came to Michigan in 1837. The Library of Michigan has been of great assistance in my research, particularly because of the wealth of information available in one place. Any money the state hopes to save by dispersing the collections will be greatly diminished by the enormous cost of such a move in manpower, transportation, and storage. An institution that receives materials from the Library of Michigan will need a budget increase to handle them. Collections do not manage themselves. Reorganization does not equal cost savings!

    • Granholm's proposal to break up one of the most significant collections of historical data in the United States is an abominable act to say the least. It's hard to imagine that someone who supposedly cares about this State would even consider such a callous action against those that voted her into office.

    • This would be a waste to close the library, as the staff are most helpful. If you need help/ info they are more than willing to help, not to mention the vast collection of material the library has. Then anyone researching info on Michigan would have to travel to various parts of the state and hope they have what one is searching for, I have seen several college students researching for papers there. Again what a waste it would be and add more people to the unemplyoment line. Just what we need.
