In the 1850s South Kensington was commonly known as Albertopolis after Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria.

He was a driving force behind the Great Exhibition of 1851, which took place in the area. Following his death in 1861, public sensitivity to the Queens grief saw the name fall into disuse. Therefore, when the Underground came along in 1868 the new station was given the ploddingly descriptive name of South Kensington.

We believe that Albertopolis is a far better name, a fitting final tribute to a Consort who continues to grip the public imagination, more suggestive of the areas many attractions and less confusing to visitors, who have a confusing array of Kensington stops to choose from.

We therefore petition Transport for London to rename South Kensington tube station as Albertopolis.

    • We can nickname one of the nearby buildings "the Acropolis". How great would that be.
