Save Santa Clarita Skate Park

For many years since the Santa Clarita Skate Park opened in 1998 thousands of kids have made it their place for good clean fun. Countless children in the Santa Clarita Valley have been able to go to the skate park and expel their youthful energy in a safe and positive atmosphere for which many consider their home away from home.

The City of Santa Clarita has planned to build a new skate park at the sports complex and when this planning was happening hundreds of people came to express their ideas and thankfulness. The skateboarders of the city were teaming with excitement about the new skate park. With the start of the new construction for numerous changes to the sports complex the kids soon discovered that the city planned to demolish the current skate park sometime around April or May of 2008. The new skate park isnt scheduled to be open until summer of 2009 and that is an optimistic opening date since the construction on the new skate park hasnt even started yet. Thus, the skaters in Santa Clarita will essentially be homeless for about a year and a half. This is too long.

In many cities across the nation and even in Santa Clarita before its current park was built skaters that have no park to skate in take to the streets and commercial business store fronts in order to skate and practice their sport. As a result there are exponentially more injuries and illegal behaviors happening, which in turn take precious time and services away from our law enforcement. This is a situation we would like to avoid.

We propose that the city of Santa Clarita make changes to their plan to allow for the current skate park to remain open until the new park is open. Without this change our kids will suffer or worse find alternate undesirable ways to have fun!

    • Please continue to give our children, our future, a place for recreation. We cannot continue to ask them to work hard and at the same time take away the chances to play, release stress and gateways to creativity.

    • in the days when funds are getting pulled away from school PE programs and art is in the dumps, it would be in the best interest of everyone to keep the kids in a creative enviroment while building a new park. what a way to shut kids out of the community they live in.
