A Petition to His Excellency Mahinda Rajapakse, President of Sri Lanka
Subject: General Sarath Fonseka в Chief of Defense Staff
It is with deep regret that we have watched the developments taking place in our beloved motherland during the past few weeks.
It is clearly evident that there is an ongoing effort to sideline General Sarath Fonseka, perhaps the most outstanding officer ever. It is also a well-known secret that the Government of Sri Lanka has gone out of their way to humiliate him by offering him the post of Secretary to the Ministry of Sports. While we do not want to analyze the governmentвs discretion to offer positions to people, or the right of certain individuals to accept such offers, we certainly stand behind General Sarath Fonseka for his right to decline this demeaning offer by the Government of Sri Lanka.
This is not the way to treat General Sarath Fonseka, the architect of the decisive victory over terrorism. No matter what our politicians say or do, people of Sri Lanka are aware of this fact and will continue to honor General Sarath Fonseka, for liberating our beloved motherland. His place in history is assured and nothing will ever change that.
For many patriotic Sri Lankans, living here and abroad, this is an act of betrayal and it is with regret we are compelled to recall the first act of betrayal in our recorded history.
Mahavamsa records that prince Vijaya after defeating the Yakkhas with Princess Kuveniвs help, betrayed her to marry the daughter of King of Madhura. This was the first betrayal recorded in Mahavamsa but many others were to follow.
We appeal to President Mahinda Rajapakse to intervene and stop these acts of humiliation and harassment and to emulate the great King Dutugemunu. It was King Dutugemunu who aptly rewarded his warriors after the reunification of Sri Lanka and this benevolent ruler secured himself a very special place in the history of our nation. Please do not prove to our younger generations that betrayal and treachery have become the inheritance of Sri Lankan rulers today. Unless you make amends without any further delay our history books will record the вRajapakse Eraв as one of the darkest and unjust periods of our history!
We appeal to all patriotic Sri Lankans to express your disapproval to the Government of Sri Lanka by signing this petition!

- I am terribly disturbed and upset as even insignificant ministers have started issuing public statements insulting this great man. Talk about gratitude!

- Leave him alone. He done his job. If he wanted to become president. Let him come and contest. Let the president handle the situation, not everyone else.

- If not for the sacrifices by the brave members of the armed forces, LTTE would still be ruling the North-East of Sri Lanka. Those heroic soldiers should be taken care of and treated well. I hate to see his security removed and face the same fate as Gen Janaka Perera. Mr. President show your true patriotism!
