San Francisco is slated by PG&E to have a new wireless grid installed starting in July 2010. Lampposts, buildings, and telephone poles will host the wireless repeater infrastructure to serve the new wireless PG&E Smart Meters, which will be installed in every home and business. These devices will add yet another layer of radio frequency radiation (RFR) to our homes and environment and will emit RFR signals throughout the day and night. In light of the lack of FCC safety standards for chronic long-term exposure to RFR and in light of the San Franciscos Precautionary Principle ordinance, we, the undersigned, respectfully request you:

1. Thoroughly investigate the PG&E Smart Meter proposal and potential health and other risks of these devices by holding public hearings;
2. Require PG&E to submit a characterization study of the Smart Meter system planned for San Francisco;
3. Allow customers to "opt out" of program; and
4. Request an immediate moratorium of the installation of Smart Meters and Smart Grid infrastructure to allow time for public hearings.

    • "Transmitting smart meters do comply with FCC 'safety' standards. However, those standards were initially designed to protect an average male from tissue heating (cooking) during a brief exposure. These standards were not designed to protect a diverse population from the non-thermal effects of continuous exposure to microwave and radiowave radiation. What PG&E's guidelines call 'low level' exposure, is actually 10,000 times as great as what exists in nature". Besides complying with the FCC guidelines, PG&E states that their SmartMeter frequencies are so low that they can't possibly have serious harmful health effects. But, research by Salford and Schirmacher reports that, "the weakest exposure level showed the greatest effect in opening the Blood-brain barrier".

    • smart meter installation should be voluntary. Besides emf, they are not accurate and just add to PG&E's profits

    • Smart Meters should be voluntary; please support an opt-out provision. Not only are they dangerous, but they have accuracy issues.

    • I strongly urge you to press for an immediate moratorium on further SmartMeter installations until its inherent problems (of which there are many) can be dealt with. Thank you.

    • Now, with the installation of "smart" water meters that transmit radio signals 4 times a day, the pace of EMF bombardment in SF is increasing. Until it's proven safe, I don't want smart utility meters anywhere near my family.
