We, the undersigned, urge Essex County Council to:

Allow the continued sale of alcohol at the Square, in the recognition that the target age range includes young people legally old enough to buy alcohol, under-age young people are not served alcohol at the Square, and The Square will struggle to continue its community and youth work and entertainment function as a result of the loss of revenue that will be caused by the plans to ban the sale of alcohol within the Square.

Allow the continued booking/promotion of bands of all ages, in order to prevent a loss of revenue and decline in ticket sales.

Scrap plans to refuse youth work with young people under the influence of drugs, including alcohol; young people with drug problems are those who need youth work the most, and as previously mentioned, this limit would include 18 and 19 year olds who have legally bought alcohol.

We feel that the councils proposals this will destroy The Square, and will lead it to its demise.
We are angered that ECC did not inform the public properly and sooner.
We do not agree with the ECC universalizing youth policy and forcing it upon The Square.
We see the Square as a music Venue for all ages, doing valuable Youth Work.
We demand the ECC to take notice of our views.

Please do not use rude language. Please add sensible comments, ones that will make the council reconsider.

    • To stop serving alcohol is the most pathetic thing, and turning it into a Youth Club is hardly the best of ideas. =/

    • This is utterly moronic. Seriously. Do you want the youth of Harlow, and the surrounding areas out on the streets, everynight of the week, instead of 5 days out of 7? Do you want underage drinking to increase more so than it already has? Do you want, more, and younger children, taking drugs on the streets? Do you want to ruin, something that has been a part of Harlow, for almost half of it's lifespan. The Square has played a large part in shaping people for the past 25 years, and some of those people, especially bands, wouldn't be where they are, without the Square, today. I speak for all of us when I say this, if the restrictions go ahead, we won't stop fighting, if you've ever been to the Square, you'll know how friendly the environment is, and how high the quality of the majority of the bands that play there are, both local, national, and even international. SAVE THE SQUARE.

    • The square has been going strong for so long... I should know! I done all the bloody heritage work!!! DONT RUIN SOMETHING THATS BEEN HERE FOR DECADES. i dont know what the council are trying to achieve by making the square as they have proposed. If the harlow council want to make harlow a better place they should sort out the scummy low lifes that hang about on the streets causing disruption and disorderly behavior... not ruining a place for teenagers and adults to go to enjoy music in a safe and friendly environment which encourages kids to get off the streets!!!!!

    • I think everyone knows what this is going to do to the people of Harlow and surrounding areas who travel to The Square to watch up and coming bands performing live. It doesn't affect the youths only, it affects those who are over 19 aswell. just think of all the bands we love to see performing at The Square, people we know, OUR FRIENDS! they come from Harlow themselves, but they wont be allowed to perform at their home towns Live music Venue anymore, after growing up going to see bands playing at the square... their influnces. STOP THIS RIDICULOUS PROPOSITION BY HELPING US FIGHT!

    • older kids are what brings in the business. you take away the older youths, you take away the bands, you take away the profit on drinks, tickets and popularity, and your left with a few younger kids who generally come to the square to see the older bands in the first place. the square will be shut down in no time if you turn it into a "youth club". what concerns me is that theres a worry about drug abuse from the older kids. i can pretty much assure you that as a regular, i know many of the kids, and i know that 90\% of the kids using drugs there are younger rather than older. this is definately not a well thoguht out plan at all
