Save the Oldest Dutch Reformed Church on Staten Island!
The 'Dutch Reformed Church on Staten Island has been a fixture in Port Richmond since 1715 and a burial place for early settlers since the late 1600s. It is the oldest church building on Staten Islands North Shore and second oldest on the Island. The church, Sunday school building and cemeteries are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Reformed Church on Staten Island has requested NYC Landmark designation. This designation would prevent demolition and requires more oversight when construction is attempted nearby. The National Register is more symbolic than protective in scope.
With the increased uncertainty over the fate of the adjacent property, Farrell Lumber, a pending re-zoning study for the nearby waterfront in Port Richmond, the Reformed Churchs congregation URGES The Landmarks Preservation Commission of New York City to designate the property in total as a NYC landmark.

- I find it outrageous that big business has an opportunity to encroach upon history, how would we feel if this was done to us in the future on sites that memorialize our labor and history?

- The first Van Santvoord to emigrate from Holland in 1718, Cornelius, (my ancestor) was brought to this church by the congregation to minister. We obviously want this building and his heritage saved.

- My husband's ancesters, The Corsen families, are buried here. We have seen several of his ancesters moved all over the NY area, including the last Westchester Guide who served with George Washington, Andrew Corsa from Fordham Manor. John Corsa and family from Fordham University to allow the building of St Johns Chapel. John Corsa donated his home and land to the University for use as a hospital. These are the people who dared to take a stand and build a new nation and the wonderous area of New York. They deserve our thanks and mostly our respect.

- I'm a former resident of Staten Island, dismayed at the lack of appreciation of its history. Since the tragic destruction of Brighton Heights Reformed Church, the preservation of this, the oldest such church on the island takes on an even greater importance.
