ISSUE: Canterbury City Councils Proposal to Charge Residents for Recycling Sacks.
We the residents of Canterbury/Whitstable/Herne Bay and surrounding rural areas are appalled and dismayed at Canterbury City Council's (CCCs) proposal to charge residents for recycling sacks - if they should happen to use more than 17 sacks in any 3 month period. We demand the Council to drop the idea from their proposed budget cuts immediately as it clearly goes against Agenda 21 and thus sustainable development policy. We also feel the Council must look for an alternative long term sustainable plan with regards to recycling which in the long term reduces the need for petroleum based recycling sacks.

- What a ridiculous idea; not the way to encourage people to save the worlds resources for future generations.

- This proposed idea is unreasonable and could not possibly be enforced when you consider communal rubbish bins for blocks of flats.

- I heartily agree. I am an avid recycler and 1 bag every 3 months is totally insufficient for my needs. I also refuse to pay 2 for sub-quality bags. This decision is simply based on statistics and in practice will create illegal dumping of rubbish and/or black bins overflowing every 2 weeks.

- Come on CCC either you are serious about recycling or just "Ticking Boxes" Start charging for sacks and you will invite illegal fly tipping. How will you deal with that?

- If you charge for bags people will stop recycling. This will be a retrograde step.

- This is an ill thought out change and typical of a Tory administration who are completely out of touch with the communities they purport to represent!

- This is a stupid and ill considered idea. It will reduce recycling rates. The charge of 2 a roll is profiteering when the cost price of a roll is 68p.

- If the current council plans to charge for recycling sacks are introduced it will prove a disaster for our recycling scheme and do nothing but damage our precious environment.

- Utterly ridiculous idea that penalises those of us with large families who really do recycle that much!
