Our community is being forced to incur the problems of the citys budget.

As a result, we are being put in a dangerous situation in the evening hours when most fires occur.

The city of New York has decided to close 4 firehouses, and our engine company 161 is included in their closings.

There are currently two trucks in the firehouse at 278 McClean Ave.

The first, Engine 161 is the water vehicle for fires.

The second, Ladder 81 is the search and rescue vehicle.

Without Engine 161, Ladder 81 cannot function properly in an event of a house fire.

We will be at the mercy of other engine companies responding from greater distances putting all parties at a grave risk.

We the undersigned members and friends of the Staten Island community call on the mayor to reconsider this closing

As taxpayers, voters and residents of New York we call on all our elected officials to convince the mayor to keep Engine 161 operational 24 hours a day 7 days the week.

    • Millions are being spent in an attempt to obliterate the beauty of the lowliness of the real New York: Coney, Shea, the little guy. And now: putting the little guy in danger. Money enough to build exclusive box seats in monstrous stadiums designed with the purpose in mind of destroying the two stadiums built for loveliness. But no money for the firehouses, no money to protect the little guy. Obliterate him, and none left, except for those who can afford those monstrously gilded box seats. P.S. While we're at it: no money to give the 9/11 dead a burial of honor. Money, though, to destroy New Jerusalem and build what is dishonorable from the blood of innocence and unpretentiousness. GOD help us from you.

    • In an area where population is becoming very dense, and an area also very close to key arties that connect roads this is the last place they should be looking to cut services from. You don't cut resources from agencies that save lives enough said.

    • While I realize that as a retired city worker, there has to be some cutbacks, I feel that cutbacks of emergency responders not only endanger the lives of the citizens of New York but also the lives of these emergency responders.

    • I have lived around the corner from Engine 161 all my life, and for the past several years have had the experience to work with this company- as I am a Paramedic for FDNY in Staten Island. There have been several occasions where not having the closest Engine Company for assistance with a critical patient (medical and trauma) could have delayed this person/patient from getting emergency assistance from both EMS and from getting rapid transport. Closing this house (engine) overnight would be a danger to the community of South Beach, Arrochar, Grasmere..... PLEASE KEEP THIS COMPANY FULL STAFFED 24 hours / 7 days... We Need FDNY to be 24 hours, as emergencies do not stop happening after 6pm....

    • My brother, his family and I have lived around the corner from Engine 161 for most of our lives. The 24 hour operation at the firehouse is integral to the safety of the surrounding area. We hope our government officials will reconsider this decision.

    • These Firemen are a vital part of this community. The Mayor has no clue whatsoever, how this decision will impact the lives of those in this community. Maybe the mayor should have held some of the 750 million for the fresh water fish tanks at the ferry and gave it to the vital city agencies. Maybe if your house is on fire someone can run to the ferry for the fish tank to dump on your house.

    • Since you continue to find money to fund baseball stadiums and bridge name changes. How about directing the funds that you insist are not available to help save lives. How many more firefighters need to lose their lives because the city failed to do the right thing?

    • It is a crime to close the Fire House during those hours, given the unique location (including many private and public schools, nursing homes, large apartment dwellings, new construction homes (attached) in the area.)
