STOP THE CLOSURE OF THE ROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL, EDINBURGH
Dear Professor Kerr,
Thank you for the opportunity to give my views on the future of the NHS in Scotland.
Everyone wants to improve integrated care of the elderly in Scotland but this will not be achieved by closing hospitals such as the Royal Victoria Hospital in Edinburgh. There is a shortage of beds for the elderly and it does not make sense in a national context to keep closing hospitals.
Most people I speak to, object to the plans to close the Royal Victoria Hospital and they wonder at the wisdom of doing so given the ever increasing elderly population and the constant references in the press to older people blocking beds in hospitals.
No one ever wants to be in hospital. However the pleasant location that the Royal Victoria provides makes that experience more bearable for the elderly and does contribute towards the holistic healing process.
It is essential that after the acute phase of medical care there should be second line care of the highest standard. As part of a national plan, I suggest that the Royal Victoria Hospital is upgraded and improved where necessary, so that it can continue to provide for the care of elderly patients, which it does so well at present.
I also suggest that the care accommodation at the Royal Victoria is expanded and that the Royal Victoria becomes one of several centres of excellence for the care of the elderly. Given the space available on the site, the NHS should consider a mixed service complex for the care of the elderly, including, among others, sheltered and supported housing, nursing home care and expansion of day centre and rehabilitation services.
And finally, I ask for a stop to the loss of NHS beds for older people in Scotland and that more will be provided in and by the Public Sector.

- The Scottish Pensions Association (Edinburgh Area Council) want the hospital to remain and we want it to be upgraded. We think we have lost enough beds for older people and this is a hospital that really does concentrate on giving care to older people. Please support us.

- where will everyone go? The New Royal infirmary won't be big enough and the Western General won't be big enough. Keep the Royal Victoria Hospital and save a lot of hassle!

- As a child. I was adopted into a family where the youngest was 19 years older than myself. I am now 60 and of my 5 remaining siblings, 3 are currently in geriatric nursing care, one in the Royal Victoria Hospital. I am so aware of the need to retain and increase geriatric services more than ever, not just because of an increasingly aged society, but because families are so scattered compared to the past, and no longer able to provide the care required by aging parents. Please, in the name of decency and common sense, let's not close any more geriatric services.

- There are plans for the Royal Edinburgh to take the patients from the RVH. As with other wards that have closed & patients moved, we know that these patients will probably die. Nobody higher up than nurses in the NHS seems to care.
