On May 25, 2010, the chancellor of Louisiana State University (LSU) released a statement announcing his recommendation for the closure of and/or elimination of funding for 17 programs and centers at LSU, including the School of Library and Information Science, the ONLY master's degree program to be listed among the 17 up for closure. LSU's School of Library and Information Science is the only school of its kind in Louisiana and graduates at least 70 highly qualified librarians on a yearly basis.

We, the undersigned, oppose the closure of the School of Library and Information Science at Louisiana State University.

    • In an age when library use continues to increase, when labor statistics note that librarian jobs continue to increase, and when librarians are vitally needed in both the private and public sectors, closing the SLIS program makes no sense. Librarians play a vital role in our culture and economy, and Louisiana needs them.
