On May 25, 2010, the chancellor of Louisiana State University (LSU) released a statement announcing his recommendation for the closure of and/or elimination of funding for 17 programs and centers at LSU, including the School of Library and Information Science, the ONLY master's degree program to be listed among the 17 up for closure. LSU's School of Library and Information Science is the only school of its kind in Louisiana and graduates at least 70 highly qualified librarians on a yearly basis.

We, the undersigned, oppose the closure of the School of Library and Information Science at Louisiana State University.

    • I am a three degree alum of LSU, the last one being SLIS. I received a well rounded preparation for librarianship. This profession looks to outsiders as easy to do and learn, but there are many issues and policy making decisions involved, beyond the field of education. Closing this school will be a great loss for the state of Louisiana. The state will have less educated librarians; those that want the professional degree will go out of state with a good chance of finding a higher paying job than they could find in state. This is one decision the state WILL regret.

    • Geograhic diversity is an important component for library science, and having a successful program in Louisiana helps to provide this diversity. It also provides a library home to those unable to go elsewhere for an education to this very important field.

    • Did you not take into consideration that this is the only Master program in LA for Library Science?

    • The state of Louisiana cannot afford to lose librarians. The schools need them, the colleges need them, the public needs them! To destroy the only library school in the entire state will directly (and negatively) influence the education levels of the people of Louisiana, and with poor education, we will remain a poor state. Please support us and keep the SLIS Program!

    • With everything that's gone on in Louisiana, cutting a program that trains home-grown information professionals is a short-sighted decision with long-term negative consequences.

    • The LSU School of Library and Information Science has a very close and beneficial relationship with the LSU Libraries. The libraries provide excellent internships for the SLIS students, and those students in turn assist both the patrons and the regular library staff in countless ways. This relationship is one of the things that makes LSU Libraries the best academic libraries I have used or worked for. The SLIS also turns out highly qualified librarians for libraries all over the nation. The closing of the LSU SLIS would mean a great loss for the world of information resources.
