Dear Prime Minister Brown,

It has come to our attention that Michael Fitzpatrick has written to you claiming that Polly Tommey, with whom you have agreed to meet, "does not represent families affected by autism". This assertion is patently untrue.

Mrs Tommey spends an enormous amount of time in discussion with the parents of children with autism. She is well aware of the struggles in our lives and the changes that we desire from our government in order to help us improve quality of life for our children.

Please accept this letter as evidence of our unwavering support for Polly Tommy. Her efforts on behalf of our children are most appreciated and she most assuredly does speak for us. The signatures of Treating Autism Trustees, members, and friends below attest to these facts.

    • I am eternally grateful to Polly Tommey for giving us a voice. Living with a child with autism is hard, heartbreaking and isolating. I don't have the strength to do what Polly is doing for me.

    • Polly is doing a fantastic job to highlight the struggles we face, such as educational provision, healthcare, which is an absolute disgrace for autistic children, and dietary intervention, which personally is all that works in this house. And to balance this with her own family life shows how exceptional she is. Keep up the good work Polly, you are amazing!

    • This lady is prompting us to prepare for the needs of our children when they are no longer children in our care, but adults, who once we have died, will have to face the world alone. Some of our children have much they can offer society, but we need to know how to facilitate that happening.
